About The Position

The Public Information Officer serves as Cape Fear Community College's primary spokesperson and public information officer and is responsible for managing media relations, speechwriting, and stakeholder communications. The PIO enhances CFCC’s visibility and reinforces its mission, vision, and goals through strategic communication across internal and external channels.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in media relations, public relations, or communications, preferably in an educational, government, or nonprofit setting.
  • Advanced knowledge of North Carolina general statutes regarding public records.
  • Proven track record of successful media relations and stakeholder communications, including experience as a spokesperson and speechwriter.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proficiency in using various communication tools, including media monitoring software, content management systems, and email marketing platforms.
  • Demonstrated creativity and strategic thinking in developing communication strategies and engaging stakeholders.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations, handle multiple priorities simultaneously, and work effectively under pressure.
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the official spokesperson for the CFCC, representing the institution to the media and the public.
  • Manage news releases, media requests, interviews, and press events.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with media outlets to secure positive coverage of the college's programs, initiatives, and events.
  • Track media and provide regular reports to leadership.
  • Receive, track, and respond to requests for public information.
  • Proactively identify media opportunities and coordinate media engagements, including press releases, interviews, and media events.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in media relations and stakeholder communications, and incorporate them into strategies and activities.
  • Ensure the confidentiality of sensitive information, including student and employee data and proprietary information.
  • Attend all CFCC Board of Trustees meetings.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding sensitive College information.
  • Represent the Community Relations department in meetings, providing input and guidance that convey the College's marketing and communications priorities.
  • Support the writing of key speeches, talking points, and communications for administrators and the creation of college-wide presentations.
  • Create compelling, data-driven presentations for internal and external audiences.
  • Supervise the development of content for various information channels, including newsletters, social media platforms, and the College website.
  • Manage the production of major external communication pieces and presentations, including the annual President's Report, the Year in Review presentation, and the In-Service presentation.
  • Create and manage a directory of CFCC experts, highlighting faculty and staff experts in diverse subjects and current affairs.
  • Make recommendations to improve communication across the college and to college stakeholders by reviewing and revising internal and external messaging.
  • Create, edit, and monitor CRM communications sent on behalf of the College.
  • Consult on college, department, or organizational communication needs.
  • Contribute as an effective project team member and promptly complete all tasks and assignments.
  • Stay informed on trends, best practices, or other strategically valuable issues that impact the College.
  • Lead CFCC's emergency communications and train stakeholders on crisis protocol.
  • Coordinate emergency messaging with college leadership and public safety personnel.
  • Serve as the primary media liaison for crisis communications and, as needed, help train faculty and staff in emergency response.
