About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University's Center for Leadership Studies is seeking an Assistant Vice Provost & Executive Director. This is a meaningful opportunity for individuals interested in teaching leadership. The position will build upon the Center's foundation, established in 2000, to provide leadership development training to undergraduate students across the university. In their capacity as an Assistant Vice Provost (AVP), they will also support the Vice Provost for Education in leadership development and other emerging opportunities, aligning with the Center's broad influence across academic and non-academic units. The AVP & Executive Director will further the university's commitment to intellectual, artistic, and technical excellence, as well as the capacity for professional and personal impact for students and alumni. This role requires a highly collaborative individual who can deliver direct services and support a wide range of curricular and meta-curricular activities aimed at developing future leaders, consistent with the university's vision for global impact.

Requirements

  • Master's degree
  • 15+ years' experience
  • Strong experience and a deep understanding of academia
  • Experience developing curricula
  • Experience teaching in a university setting and understanding how to imbue a leadership ethos into the curriculum in both curricular and meta curricular facets of a college or university in a highly collaborative and engaging manner.
  • Priority given to extensive exposure to leadership and professional development through workplace programs, professional affiliations, or other non-degree activities resulting in deep understanding of organizational behavior, human development, and the skills necessary for effective leadership and organizational impact
  • Experience in leading complex teams, involvement in senior administrative position(s), and the proven capacity to conceptualize and implement successful organizational structure(s) and impact.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience that is visionary, ethical, engaging, tactical, technical, and reflective.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
  • Successful pre-employment background check

Nice To Haves

  • Doctorate Degree is valued but not required
  • Certification in relevant areas such as teaching, coaching, organizational behavior, communications, strategic planning or related domains will be advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Build upon and enhance the strategic vision of the Center for Leadership Studies, consistent with the overarching vision and mission of the university.
  • Hire and manage a team, including Executive Fellows, Program Coordinator, and Educational Program Assistants (student staff), fostering a collaborative environment reflective of the Center's and university's core values.
  • Nurture the Center team and others engaged in leadership activities within the university to enhance the capacity to develop skilled individuals of influence, including professional development and personal support.
  • Engage in study and research to contribute to the leadership development profession and develop curriculum for seminars and future engagements, staying at the forefront of tactics for achieving the vision and mission.
  • Support the vision and mission of the Vice Provost for Education in leadership and leadership-adjacent activities, partnering with faculty, academic, and non-academic staff.
  • Maintain active involvement in the national and international leadership development community, staying current with research and trends, and contributing to best practices in leadership cultivation.
  • Nurture relationships with CMU and CLS alumni for their continued development and to secure ongoing information, counsel, and support for the Center's mission.
