Senior Community Engagement Manager (Sickle Cell), MyHealthTeam

Swoop Airlines and Aviation
$100,000 - $110,000

About The Position

At MyHealthTeam, we create online social networks for people living with chronic health conditions. Our mission is to help people feel less alone by fostering meaningful connections, trusted information-sharing, and supportive experiences rooted in real life. We are expanding our platform to serve the sickle cell disease (SCD) community, one of the most underserved populations in American healthcare. People living with SCD navigate extraordinary challenges, and we are building a trusted, member-first space for them. This role requires someone who understands that great community work is about building trust, creating belonging, and helping people feel seen, supported, and informed during vulnerable moments. The ideal candidate is empathetic, emotionally intelligent, curious about lived experiences, and skilled at facilitating authentic, supportive, and safe conversations. They should understand the specific dynamics of the SCD experience, including issues like pain management, stigma, healthcare access, and the impact of fatigue. Cultural fluency and credibility in conversations about race, health equity, and trust challenges within this community are highly valued. Comfort navigating sensitive topics related to healthcare access, treatment journeys, stigma, misinformation, and social determinants of health is essential. A deep understanding of and connection to the SCD community through professional work, advocacy, caregiving, or lived experience is strongly preferred.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience building and managing online communities, patient communities, peer support spaces, or highly relationship-driven digital experiences.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to foster thoughtful, supportive, member-centered experiences.
  • A quick, empathetic, and thoughtful approach to member interactions.
  • Strong emotional intelligence and the ability to navigate sensitive conversations with care and professionalism.
  • Experience building trust with diverse communities and fostering inclusive participation.
  • Comfort collaborating cross-functionally with the Product, Content, Analytics, Marketing, and Community teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep, credible connection to the sickle cell disease community through professional work, sustained advocacy, caregiving, or lived experience.
  • Cultural fluency with the African American community and a nuanced understanding of the trust, stigma, and healthcare access dynamics specific to the SCD experience.
  • Experience in patient advocacy, public health, social work, behavioral health, caregiving, or online peer support.
  • Experience balancing community insights, empathy, and data-informed decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary community manager for the new sickle cell disease community, establishing a visible, credible, and trusted presence.
  • Set the tone for authentic, safe, and culturally fluent participation during the critical early months of launch.
  • Shape discussion topics, norms, and member experiences that reflect the real and complex realities of living with SCD.
  • Welcome new members and create an environment where people feel comfortable participating and sharing.
  • Support ambassadors and highly engaged members who help strengthen trust, connection, and belonging within the community.
  • Create thoughtful prompts, polls, Q&As, educational discussions, and storytelling opportunities that encourage authentic conversation and practical peer support, covering SCD-specific topics like ER navigation, gene therapy access, fatigue, and disability benefits.
  • Moderate conversations to maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment.
  • Navigate misinformation, including unproven treatments, with nuance and education rather than censorship, while maintaining evidence-based standards.
  • Help members discover trustworthy, evidence-informed resources while honoring the importance of lived experience and peer connection.
  • Surface member insights, recurring challenges, and emerging themes to the Product, Editorial, Marketing, and Research teams.
  • Help internal partners better understand the emotional and practical realities members face beyond clinical symptoms alone.
  • Contribute ideas that improve how the Community, Email, Product, and Content experiences work together to better support members.
  • Manage a broader portfolio of health communities alongside the primary SCD focus.
  • Analyze engagement patterns and community trends to refine strategies and improve member connection.
  • Experiment thoughtfully with new engagement approaches while staying grounded in member needs and community safety.
