About The Position

This is a safety-sensitive position responsible for operating and maintaining various types of equipment, including tractor mowers, herbicide spray equipment, backhoe, single-axle dump truck, and water truck. The role involves maintaining waterways, canals, laterals, ditches, and rights-of-way by mowing and spraying weeds, as well as operating equipment for backfill, dust control, and loading materials. The Equipment Operator is responsible to the area Maintenance Foreman.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least six (6) months’ experience with agricultural/heavy equipment basic operations.
  • Basic herbicide spraying experience.
  • Basic mechanical skills.
  • Tire service is a plus.
  • A combination of education, training and experience may be applied.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable.
  • Must pass post-offer, pre-employment drug screen, medical exam, and motor vehicle report in compliance with District insurance guidelines.

Nice To Haves

  • CDL Class A or B is preferred.
  • N (tanker) endorsement preferred.
  • General office equipment and computer literacy a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Routinely perform required maintenance on all District waterways, canals, laterals, ditches, and rights-of-ways.
  • Routinely perform a mowing pattern to control the growth of weeds on all District waterways, canals, laterals, ditches, and rights-of-ways.
  • Service equipment with fuel and lubricants and make minor adjustments and/or replacements as needed while in use; report any major repairs needed to the Maintenance Foreman.
  • Prepare regular reports on hours of operation, quantities of fuel and lubricants consumed, measures of work accomplished, and all related data.
  • Ensure proper use of equipment, comply with service manual requirements, and prevent damage to assigned equipment.
  • Plan and coordinate moving of equipment to minimize loss of time in conjunction with the Maintenance Foreman and/or Director of Maintenance.
  • Assist in spraying herbicides to control growth of weeds as needed.
  • Assist in installation and/or repair of turnouts as needed.
  • Excavate backfill and level earth materials to accomplish work as needed.
  • Load earth materials safely into dump trucks for hauling.
  • Service equipment as per manufacturer or District requirements to ensure preventative maintenance and make minor adjustments and/or replacements as needed while in use; report any major repairs needed to the immediate Supervisor.
  • Prepare regular reports on preventative maintenance, mileage sheets, and quantities of fuel.
  • Ensure compliance with safety rules and regulations.
  • Contribute to a team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Know and abide by all department and District policies and procedures.
  • Maintain attendance during scheduled shifts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
