Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Cancer Pain Specialist, Full-time, Days

About The Position
Northwestern Medicine is hiring a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide comprehensive evaluation and ongoing management of acute and chronic cancer-related pain across the oncology continuum. The Cancer Pain Specialist works closely with oncology, hematology, survivorship, palliative care, and other specialists to develop individualized treatment plans, oversee safe opioid prescribing and monitoring, and support patients with complex pain needs, including cancer survivors, stem cell transplant recipients, and patients with sickle cell disease. The outpatient role is intended to improve symptom management, continuity of care, and patient outcomes. The schedule is four 10-hour shifts Monday through Friday, with the day off to be determined. The APP provides direct clinical care, evaluates and manages health problems, educates patients and families, collaborates with other health professionals, and contributes to quality improvement, research, staff education, and student mentorship.
Requirements
- Master’s degree from an accredited school or college of nursing, or a master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- For the Nurse Practitioner pathway: current Illinois Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licenses, plus certification as an APRN by a national certifying body approved by the Illinois Department of Regulation APRN Board.
- For the Physician Assistant pathway: current Illinois Physician Assistant license.
- Once licensed, may apply for a controlled substance license and DEA number.
- Privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
Nice To Haves
- Oncology experience.
- A minimum of two years of APP experience.
- Experience in pain management or palliative care.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive patient appraisals, including health histories and physical examinations.
- Provide direct clinical care and manage a wide range of health problems within the clinical area.
- Prescribe and order medications and therapies, and order and interpret laboratory tests, imaging, and procedures according to clinical privileges.
- Evaluate patients' need for further health care and refer them to other disciplines as appropriate.
- Develop individualized plans for acute and chronic cancer-related pain, including safe opioid prescribing and monitoring.
- Provide comprehensive teaching to patients and families, and document care, education, and procedures in the medical record.
- Collaborate with physicians and other health professionals and serve as a consultant in areas of expertise.
- Integrate research-based knowledge and clinical expertise into decision-making.
- Advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the community, and serve as a role model for the Patients First approach.
- Maintain certifications and continuing education required for licensure and privileging.
- Mentor and precept students and develop or participate in continuing education programs for staff.
- Provide formal education to internal and external groups relevant to the specialty.
- Participate in quality improvement, research initiatives, and appropriate committees or task forces.
