Day Camp Site Supervisor - Seasonal

About The Position

The Day Camp Site Supervisor provides leadership and on-site supervision for part-time staff and participants in the Summer Day Camp Program serving children ages 5 to 12. This role directs daily camp operations, supports a safe and engaging environment, manages behavior and discipline using developmentally appropriate practices, and communicates effectively with parents/guardians, staff, and City supervisors. Responsibilities include opening, closing, and securing facilities; recording attendance; supporting minor illness/injury response; preparing and inventorying snacks; maintaining clean and organized program areas; and planning, organizing, and implementing activities, crafts, sports, games, special events, and field trips. The Day Camp Site Supervisor reports to the Recreation Coordinator II.

Requirements

  • Verifiable education or training in work with school-age children in areas such as recreation, education, scouting, or 4-H; and completion of at least one of the following: A four (4) year college degree with a major such as recreation, outdoor education, education with a specialty in art, elementary or early childhood education, or a subject in the human service field; or Two (2) years of college training and six (6) months (910 hours) of satisfactory and verifiable full-time or equivalent part-time, paid or volunteer experience (since attaining the age of eighteen (18)) in the care and supervision of four (4) or more children; or Three (3) years (5460 hours) of satisfactory and verifiable full-time or equivalent part-time, paid or volunteer experience and one of the following qualifications: Complete six semester hours or nine quarter hours in course work from a regionally accredited college or university; or forty (40) clock hours of training in course work applicable to school-age children and the department-approved courses in injury prevention and playground safety for School-Aged Child Care Centers within the first nine months of employment. Satisfactory experience includes experience in the care and supervision of four (4) or more children from the ages of four (4) to eighteen (18) years old, unrelated to the individual, since attaining the age of eighteen (18).
  • Must be twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license and good driving record.
  • CPR/AED, First Aid, and Universal Precautions certifications required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must complete current state required annual continuing education (presently 15 hours minimum) related to one or more of the following: child growth and development, health and safe environment, developmentally appropriate practices, guidance, family relationships, cultural and individual diversity, and professionalism.
  • OR any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job, AND possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of first aid techniques and skill in administering First Aid and CPR.
  • Knowledge of instructional and recreational program/curriculum development principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of group and individual recreational activities, including applicable rules and conduct.
  • Knowledge of recreational equipment, including its uses and limitations for diverse recreation programs.
  • Skill in understanding and responding to customer needs.
  • Ability to operate standard office and recreation-related equipment, including copiers, fax machines, telephones, mobile or two-way radios, and sports equipment used in recreation programs.
  • Ability to swim and participate with children in swimming-related activities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, frequent interruptions, and competing priorities.
  • Ability to diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations.
  • Ability to follow and promote City and department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate, interact, and work effectively and cooperatively with individuals from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to follow workplace safety rules and practices, use appropriate safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience supervising staff in a licensed or regulated youth program (e.g., day camp, after-school, school-age childcare, recreation program).
  • Experience planning and leading age-appropriate activities for children ages 5–12 (arts/crafts, sports, STEM, group games, field trips).
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) to support communication with participants and families.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, and oversees camp activities and daily program operations; supervises staff; and guides and assists students and staff during crafts, art projects, games, and other activities.
  • Plans and facilitates staff meetings and conducts regular check-ins throughout the summer.
  • Develops, prepares, and maintains camp supplies within an established budget.
  • Collaborates with program leaders and aides to develop engaging and educational lesson plans and activities.
  • Monitors student behavior, addresses discipline issues appropriately, and supports positive behavior.
  • Ensures the safety of children and monitors the security of the facility.
  • Provides basic First Aid and administers medication to children as directed.
  • Complies with applicable state licensing requirements.
  • Communicates with parents, families, and staff regarding weekly schedules, student needs, and program-related issues.
  • Maintains attendance records, contacts parents regarding absences, and verifies the identification of individuals picking up children.
  • Prepares and inventories snacks and cleans assigned areas after use.
  • Opens and closes program and building spaces and secures facilities at the end of the program by locking doors and turning off lights.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Organize and delegate assignments to team members.
  • Support hiring, training, motivating, coaching, and developing employees.
  • Evaluate employee performance, support goal setting, and provide timely, constructive feedback.
  • Hold employees accountable for assigned tasks, safety practices, and program expectations.
  • Resolve conflicts and complaints and support appropriate documentation and reporting.
  • Analyze information and processes and recommend improvements to increase program effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Support budget awareness and responsible use of supplies and resources.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures and applicable program/licensing requirements.
