Heavy Diesel Technician/Mechanic - Night Shift

About The Position

Alaska Marine Trucking is seeking talented individuals to join their state-of-the-art heavy equipment shop in Juneau, Alaska. Mechanics will specialize in maintaining large forklifts, a fleet of tractors (including Kenworth T800s and T680s), and over 100 chassis. This is a full-time position offering family-friendly benefits, competitive pay, professional growth opportunities, and ample overtime. The night shift runs from 3:00 PM to 3:00 AM, Monday through Thursday, with a $3.00/hr shift differential. The role involves providing maintenance on heavy-duty equipment such as lift trucks, tractors, freight moving equipment, and product transfer systems, as well as company facilities under the direction of management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in working on heavy-duty equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge of hydraulic and DC electrical systems.
  • Basic understanding of metal fabrication.
  • Experienced welder in both MIG and stick processes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex electric over hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical and hydraulic schematics.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and write documents such as bills of ladings, tariffs, delivery receipts, military documents, procedure manuals, employee and safety manuals, and routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively and clearly with customers, vendors, managers, and other employees.
  • Strong communication skills both verbally and in written form.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, area, circumference, volume, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to prioritize and problem-solve in time/safety-sensitive situations.
  • Basic computer program skills: Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, Visio and Outlook.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Hazardous materials training.
  • Detail oriented, good interpersonal skills, and organizational skills.
  • Must be flexible to work extended hours and adaptable to change.
  • Must have the ability to work well under pressure.
  • Must be capable of working with little or no supervision as well as working as part of a team.
  • Must provide own toolbox and sufficient hand tools to perform most assigned duties.
  • Alaska Commercial Driving License with air brake endorsement.
  • Valid DOT medical card.
  • Forklift Operation Certification.
  • FHWA Inspector Qualification Certification (per 49 CFR § 396.19).
  • Brake Inspector Qualification Certification (per 49 CFR § 396.25).
  • Must be certified on a 4T forklift (Mechanic I).
  • Must have at least a Class A CDL permit (Mechanic II).
  • Has a Class A CDL with appropriate endorsements (Mechanic III).
  • Completion of AMT Leadership training is required (Mechanic IV).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the transportation industry is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general preventative maintenance, including fluid changes, greasing equipment, and minor component changes.
  • Maintain shop cleanliness and practice safe work habits.
  • Perform FHWA inspections.
  • Assist with major component swaps like hydraulic pumps, engines, and transmissions.
  • Perform electrical, hydraulic, engine, A/C, and emissions system diagnostics and repairs.
  • Troubleshoot complex electric over hydraulic systems.
  • Read and understand electrical and hydraulic schematics.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports in the provided maintenance software.
  • Analyze mechanical repair failures.
  • Work independently as well as take the lead on projects (Mechanic III).
  • Create and receive PO’s in the M&R software system (Mechanic III).
  • Perform advanced diagnostics and repair in electrical, hydraulic, engine, A/C, and emissions systems (Mechanic IV).
  • Utilize M&R software system in depth (Mechanic IV).
