Apprentice Mechanic
About The Position
The Apprentice Mechanic will learn to maintain and repair the company’s waste and recycling fleet. The role involves routine maintenance, diagnostics, and major repairs on refuse trucks—including rear loaders, side loaders, front loaders, and roll-offs—to support safe and reliable operations. The position is located at 2211 Hwy 301 N, Halifax, NC 27839. Pay is $26–$31 per hour, with higher pay possible based on experience, certifications, and skill level. The shift starts at 10 a.m., with expected 10–12-hour shifts Monday through Friday and overtime after 40 hours worked.
Requirements
- At least 1 year of experience as a diesel technician or mechanic.
- Own a personal set of basic mechanic’s tools.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Working knowledge of hydraulics, air brakes, diesel engines, and electrical troubleshooting.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in a fast-paced shop environment.
Nice To Haves
- Class A or B CDL, or willingness to obtain one.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and pneumatic/air brake systems.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical issues using diagnostic software and tools.
- Repair and maintain specialized waste equipment, including compressors, hydraulic cylinders, automated arms, and lift systems.
- Conduct safety inspections to ensure compliance with DOT and company standards.
- Maintain accurate work orders and fleet maintenance records.
- Maintain a clean, safe work environment and follow OSHA and DOT safety protocols.
