About The Position

Safely operate, repair, rebuild, and perform maintenance on company-owned or leased heavy-duty diesel trucks and equipment, including rolling stock, to ensure they can operate safely. The Apprentice Mechanic will learn to maintain and repair the waste and recycling fleet, performing routine maintenance, diagnostics, and major repairs on refuse trucks, including rear loaders, side loaders, front loaders, and roll-offs. The role is located at 2211 Hwy 301 N, Halifax, NC 27839. The pay rate is $26–$31 per hour, with the possibility of higher pay based on experience, certifications, and skill level. The shift starts at 10 a.m.; shifts are expected to be 10–12 hours, Monday through Friday, with overtime after 40 hours worked.

Requirements

At least 1 year of experience as a diesel technician or mechanic.
Own a personal set of basic mechanic’s tools.
Valid driver’s license.
Strong working knowledge of hydraulics, air brakes, diesel engines, and electrical troubleshooting.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in a fast-paced shop environment.

Nice To Haves

Class A or B CDL, or willingness to obtain one.

Responsibilities

Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and pneumatic/air brake systems.
Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical issues using diagnostic software and tools.
Repair and maintain specialized waste equipment, including compressors, hydraulic cylinders, automated arms, and lift systems.
Conduct safety inspections to ensure compliance with DOT and company standards.
Maintain clean and accurate work orders and fleet maintenance records.
Maintain a clean, safe work environment and follow OSHA and DOT safety protocols.
