About The Position
Microsoft is seeking a Senior Software Engineering Manager for its Microsoft AI Development Acceleration Program (MAIDAP), part of the Office of the CTO. Based at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington, or the Microsoft New England Research and Development Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, MAIDAP recruits participants from bachelor's, master's, MBA, and doctoral programs for a two-year program focused on complex AI challenges. The program works with engineering teams across Microsoft to advance AI innovation and deliver real-world impact. The manager will lead early-career software engineers, collaborate with partners to identify and build strategic AI innovations, and develop a framework for integrating reusable AI modules into Microsoft’s AI Platform. The role shapes the program’s development lifecycle, establishes engineering practices, and contributes to hiring and developing an inclusive, collaborative team. It combines technical guidance and architecture with people leadership, AI strategy, partner collaboration, and responsible AI practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and at least 4 years of technical engineering experience coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
Nice To Haves
- Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and at least 6 years of technical engineering experience coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python; or a bachelor's degree in a related field and at least 8 years of such experience; or equivalent experience.
- At least 3 years of experience as a technical lead, including mentoring and developing early-career software engineers.
- At least 3 years of experience with cloud architectures.
- At least 2 years of experience building AI or data science platforms.
- At least 2 years of Azure experience.
- Experience consuming and contributing to open-source software projects.
- Experience working with distributed teams.
- Experience evaluating, fine-tuning, and deploying LLM and traditional machine learning solutions.
Responsibilities
- Provide hands-on technical guidance; review designs, code, and pull requests; define APIs and data contracts; architect scalable systems; and establish evaluation frameworks for complex systems.
- Recruit and lead a group of early-career software engineers working on projects sourced from product teams across Microsoft.
- Partner with engineering and business stakeholders to ensure solutions meet business goals and can be integrated into their codebases.
- Create an inclusive team environment and provide ongoing feedback to help direct reports improve their performance.
- Set direction for AI-native security experiences and platform components, including choices between LLMs and classical machine learning, RAG design, grounding, model routing and fallback, and safety guardrails aligned with customer outcomes and SLOs.
- Ensure privacy, security, and Responsible AI guardrails are considered from the outset; coordinate safety reviews, abuse prevention, compliance, and incident readiness.
- Design an abstraction and reuse framework for AI modules integrated into the AI Platform; select appropriate technologies, incorporate research, and create design, validation, and reusable test-automation materials.
- Work with other Office of the CTO members to support strategic programs.
