About The Position
Toast is seeking a seasoned Engineering Manager to lead the POS Payments Experience team. The team builds and supports critical restaurant workflows for checking out and taking payments across a coordinated network of Android tablets and peripherals. These systems must be fast, reliable, and able to keep running when network connectivity is disrupted. The team also contributes to a web-based POS payments configuration experience. The role leads a high-performing engineering team, working closely with Product Management and UX and partnering across POS and Fintech teams. The manager is accountable for delivery of business outcomes, end-to-end software quality, technical direction, team development, and continuous improvement of engineering practices. They are also expected to champion AI tools and practices to accelerate development and help Toast advance as an AI-first engineering organization.
Requirements
- Experience leading and mentoring successful teams to drive predictable business results.
- Experience delivering mobile products to a large customer base; Android experience is preferred.
- Experience working in mobile codebases with a large number of developers.
- Strong technical background in Java, Kotlin, and Android, used to guide team decisions and plans.
- Experience managing a mix of core contributions and cross-team engagements.
- Experience communicating technical designs and contributing to the design process.
- Willingness to get hands-on or go deep to help the team reach its goals, while encouraging high agency and creative problem-solving.
- A collaborative, solution-oriented approach with business and product leaders.
- Desire to build diverse teams that win together and prioritize customer success.

Responsibilities
- Drive delivery of business outcomes for POS payments, including planning, schedule, and execution.
- Drive cross-team and cross-organization efforts, especially across POS and Fintech, with predictable results and excellent collaboration.
- Collaborate closely with Product Management and UX to fill the team's backlog with actionable, valuable work.
- Ensure end-to-end software quality and delivery, including ownership of monitoring and production issues.
- Partner with technical leaders to set technical direction and continuously improve architecture, codebase, and engineering practices.
- Hire and develop new team members.
- Coach individuals in their professional and technical development.
- Champion AI tools and practices to accelerate development, improve team velocity, and pioneer new ways of building.
- Lead and mentor a high-performing engineering team.
- Work hand-in-hand with Product Management and UX and contribute to cross-team partnerships.
