About The Position

As a Senior Engineering Manager for Payment Platform within the Platform group, you will lead the engineering organization responsible for orchestrating payment flows and connecting Coinbase to the global financial system. Payment Platform builds infrastructure bridging traditional finance and crypto, including on-ramp and off-ramp processing, bank and card network integrations, and stablecoin settlement across fiat and crypto rails and financial institutions worldwide. You will build and scale multiple engineering teams, set the technical vision for payment integration and settlement systems, and partner with Product, Finance, Compliance, and Engineering leadership to drive the multi-quarter roadmap for moving money in and out of Coinbase. The role owns engineering quality and operational excellence, including SLA accountability and incident response, and drives talent strategy and development of engineering leaders. Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Employees are expected to gather quarterly for in-person working sessions called “surges.” The annual base salary range is $253,895–$298,700 USD, excluding equity and bonus; total compensation may also include equity and bonus eligibility. Requirements

10+ years of software engineering experience.
5+ years of engineering management experience, including 2+ years managing managers and scaling multi-team engineering organizations.
Proven track record delivering and operating distributed payment systems, financial infrastructure, or high-volume transactional platforms at scale.
Deep understanding of payment rails such as ACH, cards, SEPA, or wire transfers.
Strong technical judgment and demonstrated ability to guide architecture, reliability, and engineering quality for critical financial services, including hands-on operational leadership through incidents and service health management.
Experience setting strategy and delivering complex work through multiple teams in regulated environments, partnering closely with Risk, Compliance, Finance, and Operations to balance speed, safety, and regulatory requirements.
Responsible use of generative AI, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Responsibilities

Build, scale, and lead a multi-team engineering organization across Payment Platform, managing engineering managers and senior individual contributors while coaching for technical excellence and career development.
Define the technical vision and architectural strategy for Payment Platform infrastructure, including bank and card network connectivity, stablecoin settlement, reconciliation, and failover.
Partner with Product, Finance, Compliance, and Engineering leadership to shape and execute the multi-quarter roadmap, translating regulatory constraints and partner-integration complexity into iterative, shippable milestones.
Own engineering quality and operational excellence, including SLA accountability, incident response, and standards that ensure funds move correctly and on time at scale.
Drive talent strategy with recruiting and develop the next generation of engineering leaders within the team.
