Software Engineering Manager, Drive Gen AI Quality and Context
About The Position
Lead software engineers and provide technical leadership for major projects while managing team development, project goals, and contributions to product strategy. The role involves overseeing engineers across multiple teams and locations, managing a large product budget, and deploying large-scale projects across international sites. Within Google Drive, the role focuses on applying Generative AI to help users interact with their content and derive value from personal and enterprise knowledge. The manager will lead delivery of user-facing features and architect and maintain backend infrastructure that processes and serves derived data for AI experiences at scale. The work includes collaboration with model builders at Google DeepMind and offers the opportunity to shape productivity tools used by billions of people.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages, such as Python, C, C++, Java, or JavaScript.
- 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role.
- 2 years of experience in a people management or team leadership role.
- Experience with Generative AI techniques, such as LLMs, multimodal systems, or large vision models, or with related concepts such as language modeling or computer vision.
Nice To Haves
- Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
- 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional or cross-business projects.
- 5 years of experience leading ML design and optimizing end-to-end machine learning, including model deployment, model evaluation, data processing, debugging, or fine-tuning.
Responsibilities
- Lead a team of software engineers to deliver excellent, scalable, efficient, and sustainable products.
- Provide technical leadership, uphold high technical standards, and contribute thought leadership and system design opinions.
- Collaborate with Engineering teams, Product Managers, and cross-functional leaders, and manage important deadlines.
- Apply product judgment to connect the team's technical work to customer and business needs; negotiate with cross-functional partners to balance engineering effort, system complexity, and customer value.
- Recruit, develop, and support the team, creating an environment where everyone can do their best work.
- Architect and maintain backend infrastructure for processing and serving derived data that powers AI experiences at scale.
- Deliver user-facing features that apply Generative AI to Google Drive content.
