About The Position
Responsible for providing safe and efficient transportation for patients requiring medical services at local and out-of-area facilities. The driver operates the ambulance or backup unit, maintains familiarity with the service area, and ensures the vehicle and its equipment are checked, cleaned, and documented appropriately. The role requires maintaining patient confidentiality, communicating through proper channels, and working effectively with patients, families, coworkers, and the public. Assigned schedules may include all shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays, and may change or be interrupted frequently. The position may also require working beyond normal hours or temporarily in other positions when necessary. The work can involve emotionally upset or hostile individuals, risk of personal injury or exposure to infectious waste and disease, and harsh weather conditions.
Requirements
- High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
- Valid driver's license and insurability under the CTCHEC insurance policy.
- AHA CPR certification, or willingness to obtain it within 60 days of employment.
- Ability to see, hear, and lift patients and equipment weighing at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, lift, and move throughout the shift.
- Ability to handle hostile or emotionally upset patients, family members, personnel, and visitors tactfully.
- Ability and willingness to work assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and to work beyond normal hours or temporarily in other positions when necessary.
- Ability to operate an ambulance or backup unit safely in varied weather, terrain, and road conditions.
- Familiarity with the main operating area and surrounding locations.
- Understanding of patient and hospital confidentiality and proper communication channels and chain of command.
- Ability to work effectively as a team member with flexibility and personal integrity.
- Good general health and emotional stability.
- Ability to handle potential personal injury, infectious waste, disease exposure including HIV/AIDS and hepatitis viruses, and harsh weather conditions.
Responsibilities
- Operate the ambulance or backup unit safely and efficiently to transport patients to local or out-of-area medical facilities.
- Learn the main operating area and surrounding locations, including housing projects, rural homes, receiving hospitals, and businesses.
- Safely operate the ambulance or backup unit in varied weather, terrain, and road conditions.
- Know the location of ambulance equipment and complete the ambulance check sheet.
- Clean and decontaminate the ambulance after each run and document each ambulance or backup-unit run appropriately.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and hospital matters and use proper communication channels and chain of command.
- Maintain good time and attendance records, participate in staff meetings and projects, and maintain a positive attitude toward the position and coworkers.
- Work assigned shifts, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays, and adapt to flexible schedules and frequent interruptions.
- Work as a team member with patients, family members, coworkers, and the public, demonstrating flexibility and personal integrity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
