A chair car/wheelchair van driver provides safe and efficient non-emergency transportation for disabled, handicapped, or elderly persons traveling to and from destinations such as medical appointments, procedures, and healthcare facilities. Drivers assist patients entering and exiting the vehicle, secure wheelchairs, and ensure safety throughout the trip. The position may suit people interested in healthcare experience, community service, or assisting elderly and disabled people. The role requires a high school diploma or GED, a current valid Massachusetts driver’s license, and at least one year of driving experience. CPR certification is required; training and certification can be provided if needed. Computer-systems experience is required, while experience with web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications is preferred. Applicants must be at least 19 years old and pass a pre-hire lift test and physical, drug screening, background check and Massachusetts CORI check, and motor vehicle record verification. The CORI and driving record are verified annually, and employees must comply with drug screening requirements. The work has significant physical demands, including lifting and maneuvering more than 125 pounds with assistance, carrying that weight up and down stairs, maneuvering a patient-loaded wheelchair up and down three stairs, and being able to sit or stand for long periods. The role also involves walking, bending, stooping, crawling, and occasionally working in low light or confined spaces within a mobile environment. Part-time employees work a minimum of 16 hours per week.
