About The Position
CoLab is hiring a Mechanical Forward Deployed Engineer to help deliver technical value to strategic Aerospace and Defence customers. This role works closely with a local customer in Cincinnati and helps customer teams rethink how they manage feedback, data, and decision-making across design and PLM. The engineer will learn customer workflows, test new ways of working, and develop repeatable methods that can be scaled across the team. The role partners with a Customer Success Manager and contributes frontline learning to product direction; it focuses on understanding and solving engineering problems with customers rather than selling or pitching. The position calls for a mechanical engineer with design experience in an Aerospace and Defence company and an understanding of the product development lifecycle across design, manufacturing, quality, and engineering leadership. The engineer will guide teams through process and technology changes, lead cross-functional projects, and work effectively in complex, ambiguous environments. The role is described as fully remote, with regular on-site work expected at a local CoLab customer. Travel is also expected for quarterly team weeks and customer engagements. The position is full-time and permanent, with stock options, unlimited paid vacation, extended health benefits, and 401k matching.
Requirements
- Background in mechanical design engineering, ideally in a medium- to large-sized organization.
- Strong understanding of PLM and ERP systems and enterprise engineering data architecture.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects and cross-functional collaborations.
- Experience working directly with customers or internal stakeholders to solve technical problems.
- Comfort working in fast-changing, ambiguous environments.
- Strong written communication and documentation skills.
- Working knowledge of high-level AI architecture, specifically LLMs.
- Familiarity with APIs, data integrations, and enterprise architecture concepts.
- Mechanical engineering background and experience as a designer in an Aerospace and Defence company are identified as characteristics of the ideal candidate.
- Understanding of the full product development lifecycle across design, manufacturing, quality, and engineering leadership.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with internal tool development, scripting, or automation.
- Exposure to AI/ML tools applied to engineering workflows.
- Prior work in design consulting or product development at scale.
Responsibilities
- Map customers’ current-state design review and engineering workflows and define target-state processes their teams will adopt.
- Deploy and tune CoLab AI capabilities using customer standards, drawing checklists, and design guidelines; diagnose performance and adoption issues.
- Apply mechanical engineering expertise to validate AI-generated results and maintain engineering rigor.
- Investigate and solve engineering data and integration challenges across PLM, ERP, QMS, and traditional design feedback tools.
- Expand adoption into new teams, programs, and sites within customer accounts in partnership with the Customer Success Manager.
- Collaborate with product teams to identify feature gaps, improve capabilities, and refine AutoReview.
- Work regularly on-site with the local Cincinnati customer.
- Travel for quarterly team weeks and customer engagements as required.
