Senior Scientist, Clinical Flow Cytometry

Bristol Myers Squibb•Princeton, NJ
•Onsite

About The Position

The Clinical Flow Cytometry team within Translational Sciences and Precision Medicine is seeking a Senior Scientist to develop and deliver flow cytometry-based biomarker assays supporting all phases of clinical development. The team’s data inform decisions on dose optimization, indication prioritization, patient selection, and potential drug combinations. This laboratory-based role leads assay design, development, qualification or validation, and execution for assigned programs across therapeutic areas. The Senior Scientist performs substantial hands-on laboratory work, leads or supports assay transfers to external laboratories, and works independently on defined deliverables, with limited supervision on complex or novel challenges. The role serves as a technical point of contact, collaborates with cross-functional stakeholders, and mentors junior scientists.

Requirements

  • PhD, MS, or BSc in biological sciences, immunology, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Relevant post-graduate experience: at least 2 years with a PhD, 5 years with an MS, or 7 years with a BSc, including substantial flow cytometry work such as high-parameter immunophenotyping, receptor occupancy, or functional assays.
  • Record of scientific contribution, such as publications, presentations, patents, or validated methods.
  • Strong hands-on expertise in high-parameter flow cytometry assay design, instrument optimization, data analysis, and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency with FlowJo, FCS Express, OMIQ, or comparable analysis software.
  • Working knowledge of fit-for-purpose qualification and validation of biomarker assays for clinical trials.
  • Ability to write clear, rigorous procedures, protocols, reports, and scientific presentations.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver with limited supervision in a matrixed environment.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, organization, and record-keeping skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Biopharmaceutical industry experience.
  • Solid scientific knowledge of immunology.
  • Hands-on experience with spectral or other high-parameter flow cytometry platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, optimization, qualification or validation, and execution of fit-for-purpose flow cytometry assays for clinical biomarker studies.
  • Design next experiments and recommend assay approaches appropriate to program objectives and development stage.
  • Apply principles of panel design, reagent selection, instrument setup, and performance characterization; refine protocols and methods as needed.
  • Perform or oversee clinical sample analysis to established quality standards.
  • Contribute to decisions about conducting work in internal laboratories, external laboratories, or both.
  • Evaluate, implement, and troubleshoot flow cytometry methods, technologies, and platforms.
  • Analyze and interpret complex flow cytometry data and recommend next steps to clinical and translational teams.
  • Serve as the technical point of contact for panel design, assay development, and data interpretation on assigned programs.
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders on assay requirements, endpoints, timelines, data delivery, and risk mitigation.
  • Lead or support assay transfers to external laboratories, including scientific oversight, troubleshooting, and quality review of data.
  • Manage concurrent assignments, prioritize timely delivery, and escalate technical and operational risks as appropriate.
  • Author and review method procedures, validation protocols and reports, study documentation, and technical summaries; present results in multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Mentor and train junior scientists on assays, instruments, and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate, traceable records and promote scientific rigor, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefit plans, including wellbeing support, retirement and financial protection benefits, and medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance offerings.
  • Flexible Time Off for eligible U.S.-based exempt employees, subject to manager approval.
  • Paid company holidays; eligible employees may also receive optional holidays.
  • Depending on eligibility, paid sick leave, up to two paid volunteer days per year, summer hours flexibility, and leaves of absence for medical, personal, parental, caregiver, bereavement, or military needs.
  • Eligible employees may enjoy an annual Global Shutdown between Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
  • Additional discretionary incentive cash and stock opportunities may be available.
