About The Position

Securian Financial is seeking a Data Scientist to apply artificial intelligence, data science, and advanced analytics to challenges in investment management. The role works with investment professionals, business stakeholders, and technology teams to build practical, scalable solutions that improve investment decision-making, streamline operations, and increase business efficiency. It uses generative AI, machine learning, and cloud-based data platforms to translate complex data and business needs into solutions with meaningful impact.

The position develops AI and data science capabilities, supports analytics and data enablement, and partners with investment and technology teams throughout solution discovery, implementation, and ongoing improvement. The job has a hybrid working arrangement: associates within a 90-minute commute work in the office at least three days each week, with flexibility for business and personal schedules.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Finance, Economics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience developing and implementing data science, analytics, machine learning, or AI solutions in a business environment.
• Experience with business intelligence and data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI to build interactive dashboards, communicate insights, and support data-driven decisions.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL, including experience with complex datasets and development of data-driven applications or workflows.
• Familiarity with generative AI, large language models, and their practical application to business processes.
• Understanding of cloud computing environments and modern data platforms such as AWS and Snowflake.
• Experience working with APIs, data integration processes, and analytical development tools.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to translate business requirements into practical technical solutions.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, including experience working with business stakeholders and cross-functional technology teams.

Nice To Haves

• Experience developing applications or workflows with generative AI technologies, including LLM APIs, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or agentic AI frameworks.
• Experience with AWS services and AI technologies such as Amazon Bedrock, Lambda, S3, or related cloud services.
• Experience with Snowflake or comparable cloud-based data platforms.
• Experience in asset management, investment management, insurance, or broader financial services.
• Familiarity with investment data platforms such as Bloomberg, FactSet, Clearwater, Intex, or Precision LM.
• Experience developing solutions involving financial document analysis, intelligent document processing, or workflow automation.
• Familiarity with software development practices, including version control, testing, deployment, and production support.
• Graduate degree in a STEM discipline, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
• Relevant cloud, data science, or AI certifications.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and implement AI and data science solutions for business challenges across investment management and operations.
• Use generative AI, large language models, machine learning, and advanced analytics to automate processes, improve decision-making, and increase operational efficiency.
• Develop and enhance AI-enabled workflows for document processing, information extraction, summarization, and knowledge retrieval.
• Work with technology and engineering teams to create scalable, reusable AI capabilities for multiple functions and use cases.
• Evaluate emerging AI technologies, tools, and methodologies for innovation and continuous improvement.
• Support testing, validation, monitoring, and ongoing enhancement of AI and data science solutions to ensure accuracy, reliability, and business value.
• Use enterprise data platforms, including Snowflake, to analyze complex datasets, identify trends, and generate actionable insights.
• Develop data-driven solutions for investment research, portfolio management, risk analysis, and operational processes.
• Partner with data engineering and technology teams on data integration, transformation, and accessibility across investment systems.
• Develop and enhance analytical tools, reporting capabilities, and data workflows to improve efficiency and decision-making.
• Promote effective data management, including data quality, governance, and responsible use of enterprise data.
• Partner with portfolio managers, investment analysts, and business stakeholders to identify opportunities for data science and AI.
• Translate business challenges into technical requirements, solution designs, and actionable development plans.
• Collaborate with Enterprise Technology, data engineering, and AI governance teams to deliver solutions aligned with enterprise technology standards.
• Lead or contribute to initiatives from discovery and prototyping through implementation and ongoing enhancement.
• Communicate technical concepts, solution capabilities, and business outcomes to technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Measure and communicate solution effectiveness, including effects on productivity, accuracy, and operational efficiency.
