About The Position

Provides nursing care through physical and mental assessments, laboratory testing, plans of care and therapeutic treatments. The role requires knowledge of a wide range of disorders including cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral. This position also involves performing crisis intervention and participating in the department's performance improvement and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program.
  • Current Registered Nurse license in the state of employment.
  • CPR and hospital-selected de-escalation technique certification.

  • Advanced degree or certification in nursing from an accredited nursing program.
  • Maintains education and development appropriate for position.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience in a behavioral healthcare setting.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a therapeutic milieu that is safe and focused on delivering quality patient care, including leading the team on shift through appropriate assignments and thorough communication.
  • Conduct admission and daily shift nursing assessments for all patients.
  • Identify and manage patient medical conditions and changes in patient condition.
  • Assess pain and utilize appropriate pain management techniques.
  • Provide education to patients and families.
  • Conduct medication reconciliation as part of the medication management process.
  • Administer medications utilizing safe medication practices and according to policy.
  • Be knowledgeable of medications, including psychotropic drugs, and their correct administration based on the age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Follow Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) protocols.
  • Establish and maintain individualized treatment plans depending on patient need.
  • Work as an active member of the team and communicate with team members (physicians, therapists, administration, other departments etc.) regarding patient care issues.
  • Document based on the SUN policies.
  • Coordinate and supervise patient care as necessary.
  • Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors, including competence in using electronic medical record and CPOE for all physician/Nurse Practitioner orders as well as wristband scanning prior to medication administration.
  • Function as a patient and family advocate, at all times.
  • Demonstrate the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Utilize proper protocols for the use of Seclusion and Restraint, and the requirements associated with it.
  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Follow all safety rules while on the job.
  • Report near misses, as well as errors and accidents promptly.
  • Correct minor safety hazards.
  • Communicate with peers and management regarding any hazards identified in the workplace.

  • Support and maintain a culture of safety and quality.

  • Build collaborative relationships with patients, families, staff, and physicians.
  • Retrieve, communicate, and present data and information both verbally and in writing as required.
  • Demonstrate listening skills and the ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken and written word.
  • Demonstrate adequate skills in all forms of communication.

  • Complete required trainings within defined time periods, as established by job description, policies, or hospital leadership.

  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and staff information, following HIPAA and other privacy laws.
  • Ensure proper documentation in all position activities, following federal and state guidelines.
