About The Position

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Training Program.
• Licensed and approved as a physician assistant in the State of Michigan.
• Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
• Approved for prescriptive authority and hold a current DEA registration.

Responsibilities

• Assist the neurosurgeon in the operating room as needed.
• Round independently on patients; assess and monitor their health and status, document findings in the hospital computer system, and collaborate with neurosurgeons and other health care providers.
• Perform complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to diagnose neurosurgical problems.
• Prescribe necessary treatment and services for quality patient care, record data, and document tentative conclusions for physician review.
• Assess the physical, psychosocial, and developmental status of patients and their families.
• Coordinate in-hospital care with nursing staff and other services or departments, and coordinate with social workers, community nursing services, and other providers.
• Provide patient and family teaching and support, and manage cases, including care or family conferences.
• Manage pre-operative and post-operative orders and patient discharge planning.
• Manage prescriptions, treatments, and studies according to collaborative practice arrangements with specific physicians or institutions.
• Perform wound treatments, dressing changes, and suture removal.
• Perform shunt taps and shunt reprogramming.
• Apply and remove head frames and braces.
• Manage clinic follow-up and document in the EHR.
• Triage patients and phone calls appropriately.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, physicians, patients, nurses, and clients.
• In collaboration with the on-call physician, provide care to hospitalized patients.
• Follow applicable security and confidentiality procedures, employee conduct standards, and work rules; maintain patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA guidelines.
• Maintain licenses and hospital privileges, CEUs, and BLS.
