About The Position
The Patient Transporter is responsible for transporting patients to and from various hospital units and departments while assuring quality care during transport. The role includes receiving and documenting transportation assignments, completing required logs and trip tickets, and transporting patients using appropriate equipment or by accompanying them while they ambulate. Transporters attend required education and staff meetings, report incidents and concerns, help maintain and clean equipment, and follow organizational policies and professional conduct standards. This is a non-management position reporting to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent, or post-high-school diploma/highest degree earned.
- No experience required.
- Knowledge of fire and disaster procedures and codes, including the location and operation of fire extinguishing equipment.
- Knowledge of appropriate actions to take if a patient becomes distressed.
- Ability to complete all training requirements in the department orientation program.
Responsibilities
- Receive and document patient transportation assignments.
- Set a daily goal of transporting three patients per hour.
- Complete appropriate documentation, including the admitting log, sign-in book, nursing station log, and trip tickets.
- Perform telephone activities satisfactorily.
- Transport patients by wheelchair, stretcher, bed, mobilizer, or wagon, or accompany them while ambulating; manage attached apparatus such as intravenous solutions, drainage systems, chest tubes, and oxygen.
- Attend in-service education and scheduled departmental staff meetings.
- Report accidents, unusual occurrences, and complaints to the appropriate individual.
- Assist with maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
- Follow all policy, procedure, and behavioral requirements.
- Represent the department, unit, and system professionally.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
