About The Position
Operates equipment and vehicles used to collect and transport solid waste, yard debris, and recycling materials, including garbage and recycling trucks and a knuckle boom loader. Performs daily equipment inspections and routine maintenance and minor repairs, and completes required inspection and maintenance documentation. Works under general supervision and reports to the Crew Supervisor, Sanitation. The position has no supervisory authority, though it may direct and monitor a workforce assigned to individual tasks. The employee may also assist with removing deceased animals from City roadways, perform backup duties for other positions, provide customer service, and report to the City's Emergency Operations Center when the Emergency Operations Plan is activated. The schedule is Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. for residential work, with a weekly weekend rotation of commercial drivers working midnight to 10 a.m. The work is performed outdoors and frequently near moving mechanical parts, with occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions, fumes, heat, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level is moderately loud. The job involves frequent use of hands and arms, climbing or balancing, and stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; lifting up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Applicants must have a valid Class B South Carolina Commercial Driver's License. The position requires a high school diploma or GED and three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Basic mechanical knowledge and the ability to perform minor maintenance, use service tools, work safely, communicate effectively, follow instructions, perform manual tasks for extended periods, and maintain effective working relationships are required.
Requirements

- Valid Class B South Carolina Commercial Driver's License.
- Basic mechanical knowledge of related equipment.
- Basic ability to note minor maintenance requirements and operate service tools and equipment.
- Ability to perform manual tasks for extended periods, work safely, communicate effectively, establish and maintain effective working relationships, and understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including frequent lifting or moving of up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds.
Responsibilities
- Operate garbage trucks and other vehicles to collect garbage, yard debris, and recycling materials.
- Operate trucks and machinery to collect and transport materials and debris and to pull trailers.
- Inspect machinery and equipment daily; perform necessary repairs and maintenance and service vehicles, including washing, greasing, and fueling.
- Prepare documentation of daily inspections, maintenance problems, and other required matters.
- Communicate with supervisors, mechanics, coworkers, and others involved in departmental activities.
- Drive and operate a knuckle boom loader to assist with yard debris collection.
- Ensure safe and efficient operation of equipment.
- Direct and monitor the performance of workers assigned to individual tasks.
- Assist with removing deceased animals from roadways within City limits.
- Participate in safety training and, when appropriate, serve on committees or inspection teams and make safety suggestions.
- Follow safety practices and rules, use personal protective equipment, report unsafe conditions and equipment defects, and promptly report accidents and incidents, including near misses.
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance and follow City policies regarding absences and tardiness.
- Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
- Report to the City's Emergency Operations Center for emergency duty when required by activation of the Emergency Operations Plan.
- Perform backup duties for other positions and other related duties as required.
