About The Position

Requirements

• A nursing degree from an accredited college or university.
• Training in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
• At least 2 years of experience; long-term care facility experience is preferred.
• Current, unencumbered, active RN license in the state.
• Current CPR certification.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English and to read technical procedures and policy manuals.
• Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
• Ability to make independent decisions, solve practical problems, and communicate information about residents’ conditions.
• Leadership and supervisory ability, tact, and ability to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
• Knowledge of nursing and medical practices and of laws, regulations, and guidelines applicable to nursing care facilities.
• Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, objectives, policies, and procedures needed to provide quality care.
• Knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to residents’ age-related needs.
• Patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, enthusiasm, and willingness to work with residents who may be difficult or upset.
• Willingness to learn new methods and principles and incorporate them into nursing practices.
• Ability to move intermittently throughout the workday, cope with job-related mental and emotional stress, and meet the facility’s general health requirements, including medical and physical examination.
• Ability to see and hear adequately, with or without prosthetics, to perform the job’s requirements.
• Ability to lift, push, pull, move, or carry at least 25 pounds to a height of 5 feet and for a distance of 50 feet; may assist with resident evacuation during emergencies.
• Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace.
• Must maintain required continuing education and licensing and remain in good standing with the State Board of Nursing.

Responsibilities

• Supervise day-to-day nursing activities during the assigned tour of duty and assist with the overall management of nursing staff.
• Assist the Director of Nursing Services with nursing department operations, policies and procedures, quality assurance, surveys, discharge planning, reports, and administrative documentation.
• Attend facility committee meetings, prepare or provide reports, contribute to care plan and discharge plan activities, and implement committee recommendations as instructed.
• Ensure adequate nursing and nursing assistant staffing, assign and delegate work, make rounds, monitor attendance and performance, and report staffing or personnel concerns to the Director.
• Coordinate resident admissions, transfers, and discharges; communicate admission information to staff and ensure rooms are ready.
• Assess and monitor residents, provide direct nursing care as needed, consult with residents, families, and physicians, and notify physicians and next of kin when a resident’s condition changes.
• Review clinical notes, care plans, medication records, treatment schedules, and resident care to ensure that care is documented and delivered appropriately.
• Perform nursing procedures as needed, including starting IVs, collecting specimens, and taking vital signs and blood pressures.
• Monitor medication administration, storage, and control, and ensure treatments are provided as scheduled and in accordance with orders and facility procedures.
• Support staff development, including in-service training, clinical supervision of nurse aide trainees, and continuing education.
• Promote safety, sanitation, hand hygiene, infection control, emergency preparedness, and appropriate use of personal protective and other safety equipment.
• Recommend nursing department equipment and supply needs, monitor stock levels, and support safe operation and maintenance of equipment.
• Participate in resident assessments and care planning, help coordinate MDS and RAP processes, and ensure personnel are familiar with and follow resident care plans.
• Report accidents, incidents, occupational exposures, hazardous conditions, suspected fraud, privacy breaches, and unauthorized access to facility information systems as required.
• Maintain effective working relationships with residents, families, staff, physicians, government agencies, and other facility departments.
