About The Position

The Department of Environmental Quality/Office of the Secretary has a vacancy for an Environmental Chemical Specialist within the Small Business Environmental Assistance Program. This role focuses on providing engineering support to small businesses and communities to help them comply with various environmental regulatory programs. The successful candidate will need knowledge of the chemical process industry and/or various chemical processes, including performing detailed engineering reviews of processes and emission control technology. The position also requires the ability to understand complex environmental regulations, apply scientific interpretations, and perform advanced engineering calculations for compliance issues. Strong communication and teamwork skills are also essential.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in an engineering field; OR A master's degree in an engineering field or a chemical or physical science field.
  • Knowledge of the chemical process industry and/or various chemical processes.
  • Ability to understand complex environmental regulations.
  • Ability to apply scientific interpretations and perform advanced engineering calculations.
  • Engaging and well-spoken.
  • Team player who works well in group settings.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to small businesses and small communities on understanding their rights and obligations under the environmental regulatory codes.
  • Assist small businesses and communities in completing permit applications/NOIs, emissions inventory questionnaires, performing engineering calculations to determine air emissions, submitting NetDMRs, etc.
  • Conduct site visits with small businesses to ensure compliance, particularly those who are newly permitted entities.
  • Support facilities in performing detailed engineering review of processes and emission control technology.
  • Plan and participate in outreach/training activities in the regions.
