About The Position

As an Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) intern, you will work alongside engineers and scientists on hardware development, payload integration & operations, laboratory & test operations, modeling & simulation, space environments, scientific research and propulsion systems for programs like Human Landing Systems, Space Launch Systems and the International Space Station! The role provides engineering intern level support for the NEXUS (Network Extension for User Continuity and Sustainability) project at MSFC in the Science and Technology (ST) Office. The NEXUS project is a NASA initiative aimed at developing commercial relay services to replace the aging Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). This support will include supporting trade studies and concept development across several orbital classes. As an ASED intern, you are expected to have a valid driver’s license, access to an automobile, and be able to drive yourself to work locations. A STAR ID is required. You will be expected to attend MSFC facility scheduled tours, Technical Fellow talks, luncheons, and training sessions in addition to your work. Participation in activities outside of work with fellow interns is highly encouraged, which will be scheduled by social coordinators to foster group cohesion and lasting friendships.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a Bachelor of Science degree program in Engineering or related STEM degree (from an ABET accredited institution preferred)
  • Must have completed the sophomore year of degree program
  • Must be able to provide own transportation
  • Maintains a minimum of a 3.0 out of 4.0 overall grade point average
  • Strong problem-solving skills, and the pragmatic application of design theory and analytical skills
  • Ability to work and thrive in a team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to read basic design schematics and diagrams
  • Proficient with MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Basic understanding of orbital mechanics
  • Knowledge of STK or the ability to quickly learn STK
  • Collaboration (Work closely with teams, support ad-hoc requests, and provide feedback from time-to-time)
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required

Responsibilities

  • Assist with developing trade studies and concept development across anticipated orbital classes, including GEO, MEO, and LEO
  • Assist in evaluating potential constellation configurations for NEXUS to include the assessment of the number and placement of space and ground assets
  • Assist in the development of coverage analysis and supporting visualizations
  • Assist in technical evaluations of vendor concepts
  • Assist the NEXUS team with building an analytical foundation for comparing options for the NEXUS project
