About The Position

FormAssembly is seeking an Infrastructure Systems Engineer to manage infrastructure for federal government and private-sector clients. The role designs, deploys, and manages secure AWS environments, applies AWS best practices, and automates infrastructure and operational work. It calls for strong infrastructure automation experience, advanced Linux knowledge, and excellent communication skills. The engineer builds and maintains infrastructure as code, CI/CD pipelines, containerized services, monitoring and alerting, and secure, compliant cloud environments. The role also works with data flows and databases, documents systems and practices, collaborates with cross-functional teams, and mentors colleagues. AI tools are used daily to accelerate troubleshooting and reduce repetitive work, with human review and existing IaC and CI/CD safeguards retained for all production changes. This is a fully remote role with a distributed team that communicates digitally throughout the day. Applicants must be U.S.-based citizens and willing to undergo a rigorous pre-employment background check, including verification of references, employment history, GitHub repositories, and LinkedIn profile information. Eastern time zone location, or willingness to work those hours, is preferred.

  • AWS Professional-level certification, such as AWS DevOps Engineer – Professional or AWS Solutions Architect – Professional, or equivalent demonstrable expertise.
  • Expertise with CI/CD tools, including Jenkins and GitHub Actions.
  • Proficiency in Python and PHP/Laravel, plus one or more of Bash, JavaScript, or similar.
  • Experience with Docker, AWS ECS, and microservices architecture.
  • Advanced Linux knowledge, including performance tuning and troubleshooting.
  • Competency with multiple compliance requirements, including PCI, HIPAA, and SOC 2.
  • Strong Terraform/OpenTofu skills for provisioning cloud infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of networking and security concepts, including VPC, subnetting, DNS, firewalls/security groups, encryption, and IAM.
  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Deep understanding of GitHub Actions and self-hosted runners in AWS.
  • Located in an Eastern time zone or willing to work those hours.

Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and manage AWS environments using infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform/OpenTofu, AWS CloudFormation, or Pulumi.
  • Implement serverless architectures using AWS Lambda and Step Functions.
  • Use configuration management tools such as Ansible and Puppet.
  • Build and maintain secure CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or AWS CodePipeline.
  • Develop Python and Bash automation scripts and use AI or predictive techniques where feasible to reduce manual work.
  • Embed security, compliance, and testing practices into automated workflows.
  • Containerize applications with Docker and manage them on AWS ECS.
  • Optimize container performance, scalability, and resource utilization.
  • Implement and manage monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions, including New Relic, to track application health, performance, and security.
  • Proactively troubleshoot issues to maintain high availability.
  • Enforce security best practices involving IAM, VPC, WAF, TLS/SSL, and key management, and align systems with applicable federal and other compliance standards.

  • Ensure data integrity, high availability, and performance optimization.
  • Create and maintain documentation for automation, CI/CD processes, and infrastructure setups.
  • Mentor team members and share best practices.
  • Use AI tools daily to speed up troubleshooting, draft infrastructure and pipeline changes, and reduce repetitive work.
  • Verify AI-generated work and ensure changes proceed through IaC, CI/CD, and human review before production.
  • Identify measurable ways AI can reduce detection time, resolution time, or toil and establish them as shared team practices.
