About The Position

The Chief Data and AI Officer (CDAIO) is a new university leadership role bringing analytics, data, and AI together under one division. The CDAIO champions data and AI in ways that reflect the university’s values and mission, leads the transformation of data into strategic insights, and promotes the ethical and responsible use of AI and analytics. The university has invested in AWS, databases, ETL software, AI tools, and AI servers, and this role will build on those investments. The CDAIO establishes the vision, governance, and operating framework for data and AI; fosters a data-driven culture; and evolves technological capabilities to address university priorities. The role spans institutional strategy and effectiveness, enterprise analytics using AWS and Tableau, and applied AI across university operations. It turns university priorities into initiatives that improve operational effectiveness and build campus interest and fluency in AI and data. The CDAIO leads enterprise direction for data and AI platforms, governance, and investment priorities through a collaborative process with stakeholders across the organization. In the first 12 to 24 months, success means establishing a trusted data, analytics, and AI foundation that improves decision-making and automates manual processes. The CDAIO serves as a connector, translator, and storyteller, communicating technical work and actionable insights clearly to varied university audiences. The role cultivates close relationships with the Provost, CFO, CIO, academic deans and leaders, and other key stakeholders, and leads a team of four. The home campus is Green Bay. The position may be performed on campus or on a hybrid schedule, subject to an approved telecommuting request, and may occasionally require work or travel to the Marinette, Sheboygan, or Manitowoc campuses based on operational needs. This is a full-time Limited appointment in the Budget and Finance department. Minimum compensation is $125,000.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field by the time of application.
  • At least 7 years of experience in analytics, business intelligence, data science, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in SQL and Python.
  • Technical ability to build, review, and improve real products alongside the team.
  • Working knowledge of modern cloud data platforms and business intelligence tools, including AWS and/or Tableau.
  • Hands-on experience applying AI or machine learning in an organization.
  • Understanding of AI ethics, compliance, and governance frameworks.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, including the ability to translate technical information for varied stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years leading people and/or projects.
  • Previous experience in higher education.
  • Fluency with modern AI tools and large language models.

Responsibilities

  • Lead four team members and coach each to do their best work.
  • Lead the organization’s data, analytics, and AI strategy and align it with the university’s mission and values.
  • Build data and AI fluency across the UWGB community in collaboration with university partners.
  • Establish governance mechanisms that build trust in data, AI models, and analytics-driven decision-making.
  • Identify, pilot, and scale AI use cases that improve UWGB’s efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Deliver analytics and AI across finance, HR, operational, and academic data.
  • Partner with university leaders to embed AI and analytics into strategic initiatives and digital transformation efforts.
  • Develop an enterprise operating model that integrates data governance, AI ethics, and analytics-driven insights into business processes.
  • Set enterprise direction for data and AI platforms, governance, and investment priorities through collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Translate findings into actionable insights and communicate them to inform decisions.
