Utility Locator I

About The Position
McKim & Creed is an employee-owned engineering and geomatics firm with more than 800 employees and a culture centered on “People Helping People.” The Utility Locator I is an entry-level role that learns to locate underground utility lines and support Subsurface Utility Engineering fieldwork using maps, records, field equipment, and established safety protocols and industry standards. The role involves outdoor work across urban, suburban, and rural terrain and may include adverse weather and other challenging conditions. Daily travel is required, with occasional overnight travel and periods of working more than 50 hours during busy periods. Requirements
- Entry-level role; 0 to 3 years of proven experience as a utility locator or SUE Technician.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to walk outdoors for long periods over varied terrain and work under adverse conditions, including heat, cold, hills, swamps, wildlife, insects, and high-traffic areas.
- Ability to travel daily; occasional overnight travel is required.
- Ability to work more than 50 hours during busy periods.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds and operate equipment as needed on a project.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work in fast-paced environments.
- Ability to work unsupervised when required.
- Background and motor vehicle checks and pre-employment drug screening are conditions of employment.
Nice To Haves
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent preferred.
- Specialized training from a vocational-technical school or experience as a rod person/instrument person.
- Experience as a utility locator or in a similar role.
- Knowledge of underground utility systems and ability to interpret maps and records.
- Familiarity with utility locating equipment such as electromagnetic locators and ground-penetrating radar.
- Current Commercial Driver’s License.
- Self-motivation and an entrepreneurial spirit.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities
- Learn to use maps, records, and other resources to accurately locate underground utility lines.
- Learn to use Subsurface Utility Engineering field equipment and other geophysical methods while following safety protocols, industry standards, and guidelines.
- Maintain accurate records of utility locations and updates.
- Conduct regular inspections and assessments to identify potential hazards or issues.
- Assist with maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and work sites.
- Adhere to company policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
