Traveling HDD Operator/Locator
About The Position
The CDL Directional Drill Operator/Locator operates the equipment used to install fiber-optic, copper, coaxial, and single- or three-phase power cables, and potentially sewer or water facilities, using horizontal directional drilling (HDD). The role requires experience drilling around utilities in rural and urban settings, reading prints and schematics, and the ability to train and mentor team members. This is a 100% field position involving outdoor work in all types of weather and travel that may require extended periods away from home. The operator supports all aspects of job-site work, including basic labor, equipment maintenance, and proper site setup and cleanup.
Requirements
- Valid Class A CDL.
- Field experience working with HDD crews, operating rigs and/or locating.
- Experience with horizontal directional drilling around utilities in rural and urban areas.
- General knowledge of utility construction procedures, including print reading.
- Knowledge of or familiarity with the procedures, tools, and equipment used to install underground utilities safely and effectively.
- Comprehension of ground conditions for drilling or boring.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Willingness to learn.
- Ability to maintain equipment and hand tools.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and carry out instructions.
- Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to pass pre-employment screenings.
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and perform physical activities including walking, sitting, standing, bending, twisting, stooping, pushing, pulling, carrying, and lifting.
- Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs to perform skilled movements.
- Ability to travel and be away from home for extended periods.
Nice To Haves
- Experience working around or with different sizes of Vermeer or Ditch Witch units.
- Experience with various brands of locating equipment.
Responsibilities
- Operate directional boring equipment to install underground cable conduit or utilities.
- Steer the drill according to job preparations and projections.
- Operate construction equipment to align, move, and adjust machinery to meet grade and alignment specifications.
- Maintain bore profile plots and provide directional drilling data to customers.
- Follow company and manufacturer safety procedures and industry safety standards, and attend mandatory safety meetings.
- Inspect and maintain equipment, including routine greasing and oiling and minor repairs as needed.
- Read utility locates and coordinate daylighting of facilities.
- Assist with all aspects of the job, including basic labor responsibilities.
- Ensure proper work-site setup and cleanup, including traffic and pedestrian control.
- Train and mentor other team members.
