About The Position

Requirements

• For Level 1, a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related healthcare field, or relevant experience; the posting also lists alternatives of an associate degree plus four years of related work experience, or eight years of related work experience.
• Current state license if required; licensure requirements depend on the state.
• A bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology is required except in grandfathered situations.
• Level 1 is described as entry level and requires no experience.
• Level 2 requires at least three years of experience, in addition to Level 1 requirements.
• Senior level requires five years of experience, in addition to Level 1 and Level 2 requirements.
• Ability to perform moderate- and high-complexity laboratory testing and related specimen-analysis and quality-control procedures.
• Ability to perform the physical demands of the role, including extensive sitting or standing, manual dexterity, reaching or carrying, and occasional lifting and carrying of items up to 40 pounds.
• Corrected vision, color perception, and hearing within the normal range, and legible handwriting.

Nice To Haves

• AMT, ASCP, or equivalent certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist with phlebotomy and collect ordered patient specimens; confirm pre-authorization and complete appropriate consent forms for limited-coverage tests.
• Assist with special procedures, such as bone marrow procedures in the room.
• Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and patient-result records.
• Analyze Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology specimens.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance.
• Follow quality-control policies and document QC activities, calibrations, instrument maintenance, and control, calibrator, and reagent lot numbers.
• Participate in proficiency testing by analyzing samples and reporting results at least annually.
• Prepare peripheral blood smears and perform complete WBC differentials on normal and abnormal smears.
• Perform microscopic examinations of urinary sediment.
• Record results in worksheets and computer systems, maintain files, and process specimens for send-out testing.
• Follow laboratory procedures when test systems fall outside acceptable performance levels; identify and correct problems or notify a supervisor, and document corrective actions.
• Maintain quality-assurance documentation, including accessioning and test-report logs, QC logs, equipment records, and checklists; verify critical results and document follow-up.
• Maintain supplies, verify their viability before patient testing, prepare reagents, stains, and other chemical solutions, and restock the laboratory.
• Send tests not performed in-house to reference laboratories and process incoming orders and results for charting.
• Chart patient results promptly as needed.
• Identify and band patients for blood-product transfusion and process labeled specimens according to local blood-bank policy.
• Train employees in laboratory procedures; potentially serve as primary operator for at least one instrument and contribute to development of instruments and procedures.
• Serve as a resource for laboratory science information and potentially oversee daily laboratory activities when the supervisor is absent.
• Comply with quality-assurance standards, OSHA requirements, Universal Precautions, and applicable regulatory standards.
• Dispose of hazardous materials properly, maintain a clean work environment, and protect confidential patient and medical-staff information.
• Perform CLIA-classified moderate- and high-complexity testing with minimal supervision.
