Staff/Sr. Staff, Physical AI Researcher (LG Emerging Tech Lab)

LG Electronics•Santa Clara, CA
•$200,000 - $350,000•Hybrid

About The Position

LG Electronics is seeking a Physical AI researcher to help define embodied intelligence research and shape research and product roadmaps toward its Zero-Labor Home vision. This hybrid role is based at LG’s Emerging Technology Lab in Santa Clara, California. The researcher will develop generalist robot intelligence for deployment in next-generation LG robot platforms, leading research that can progress from new ideas to products at global scale. The position leads a growing team of Physical AI researchers and works with robotics and AI teams across LG to translate advanced research into intelligent systems. LG’s Emerging Technology Lab is part of the CTO organization and operates as a Center of Excellence, advancing selected emerging technology areas, setting strategic direction, building partnerships, and delivering business value. The role maintains a research presence while supporting product development, research ownership, publication, university and AI-lab collaboration, and engagement with startups and industry partners. The successful candidate will set technical direction for Physical AI research, lead internal and external collaborations, define projects aligned with business objectives, and advance multimodal robot foundation models, physical intelligence, world-action models, generalist dexterity, and agentic robot orchestration.

Requirements

  • PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Machine Learning, or a related technical field.
  • Strong publication record and at least 3 years of industry experience.
  • Deep research and engineering expertise in one or more relevant areas: robot foundation models (including VLAs, LBMs, and diffusion/flow-matching policies for manipulation or locomotion); world-model training for robot action prediction; spatial intelligence; multimodal representation learning across vision, language, and touch; or learning from human demonstrations and self-play.
  • At least 1 year of experience leading technically ambitious research projects in dynamic, fast-moving environments.
  • Hands-on experience integrating AI models with real robotic systems, including manipulators and/or mobile robots, and sensors such as RGB and depth cameras, LiDAR, force-torque sensors, and tactile sensors.
  • Experience with physics-based simulation platforms such as PyBullet, MuJoCo, or Isaac Sim for large-scale data generation, experimentation, and evaluation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical ideas to research, engineering, and leadership teams.

Responsibilities

  • Set the technical direction for LG’s Physical AI team and lead advanced research in multimodal robot foundation models and physical intelligence.
  • Lead and manage collaborations with LG headquarters and third-party research labs to integrate advanced robotics technologies into the LG ecosystem.
  • Build and influence a cross-functional Physical AI ecosystem with LG AI, robotics, software, and product teams, as well as external research partners.
  • Define project scope, goals, and deliverables aligned with research and strategic business objectives.
  • Lead fundamental and applied research advancing physical intelligence, with a path toward real-world robotic systems.
  • Invent and improve approaches to physical intelligence, including multimodal foundation models, world-action models, generalist dexterity, and agentic robot orchestration.
  • Lead a growing team of Physical AI researchers and work with LG robotics and AI teams to translate research into next-generation intelligent systems.
  • Collaborate with startups and industry partners to co-design hardware-software systems and validate them in real-world applications.

Benefits

  • No-cost employee premiums for eligible employees and dependents for medical, dental, vision, and prescription benefits.
  • Company matching contributions to a 401(k) retirement savings plan, with immediate vesting.
  • Paid time off, including company holidays and a combined bank of paid sick and vacation time.
  • Performance-based short-term incentives, varying by role.
  • Confidential mental health resources and personal fitness goal incentives.
  • Paid parental leave and family support benefits.
  • Group-rate life and disability insurance.
