A WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. This role involves counseling mothers in person and by telephone, being available outside of typical working hours for new mothers experiencing breastfeeding problems, and providing information on the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming barriers, and getting a good start. The position also includes attending prenatal classes and support groups, monthly staff meetings, and breastfeeding conferences/workshops. Responsibilities also include time sheet and EAR entry, potential emergency shelter duty, completing mandatory training, assisting with WIC program promotion, maintaining confidentiality, keeping accurate records of contacts, and referring mothers to appropriate resources such as WIC nutritionists, lactation consultants, physicians, public health programs, and social service agencies.
