About The Position

Upside is an applied AI engineering and consultancy firm that builds software for scaling companies, international brands, and large institutions, with particular depth in healthcare and life sciences. The team designs, builds, and runs systems, and develops its own intellectual property, including frameworks and components refined through production deployments. Upside works on unclear, high-stakes problems, determining what should be built, delivering it properly, and leaving clients with systems they can own. The Software Engineer role combines engineering, consulting, and product thinking. Engineers own technical decisions across architecture, data, security, performance, and failure modes; learn client domains and translate their processes and constraints into technical decisions; and consider how systems behave at scale, fail, and are operated after launch. The role emphasizes deliberate scoping so that the work built creates value. The position involves close collaboration with client engineering and product teams and the use of coding agents as a core delivery engine. Engineers make foundational design decisions, oversee agent-generated implementations, establish quality controls, and contribute workflows and patterns to the wider team and Upside’s open-source frameworks. The role is Kraków-first, with hybrid or remote work available from anywhere in Poland.

Requirements

  • Proven background as a Software Engineer, including building, architecting, and owning complex backend or cloud systems end-to-end.
  • Production experience with LLM coding agents applied to production-grade software engineering.
  • Hands-on experience building, shipping, or integrating LLM-powered and agentic components into production software systems.
  • Ability to adapt to changing requirements, tools, and domain contexts and take responsibility for technical outcomes from discovery through post-launch stability.
  • Strong client-facing communication skills, including the ability to work with client technology leaders, constructively challenge assumptions, and explain architectural trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong Python skills, or deep experience in another major backend language such as Ruby, Java, TypeScript, or Rust and readiness to pivot to Python quickly.
  • Fluent English at C1 or higher.

Nice To Haves

  • A university degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field is highly valued.
  • Frontend experience with React or Vue.
  • Cloud and infrastructure experience with AWS, Docker, or Kubernetes.
  • History of contributions to open-source tools or libraries.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with client engineering and product teams to understand business requirements, architect solutions, and own delivery through production.
  • Drive complex system development using coding agents as a core delivery engine; manage context, break architectural specifications into agent-executable tasks, and run work in parallel under strict quality control.
  • Critically review generated implementations and design tests, evaluations, and runtime checks to catch edge cases and silent failures.
  • Maintain high standards for security, performance, and maintainability.
  • Make and document foundational decisions about data models, integration boundaries, security parameters, and trade-offs for human and synthetic contributors.
  • Share proven workflows, evaluation methods, and agent orchestration patterns to help the engineering team improve.
  • Contribute to Upside’s open-source frameworks.
