About The Position

The Registered Nurse works in the Observation/Clinical Decision Unit at St. Peter’s Hospital, caring for patients admitted from the Emergency Department with an expected length of stay of 24 hours or less. When observation admissions are low, the unit may also serve as a discharge lounge. During peak census, it may function as a rapid-admission unit to decompress the Emergency Department while patients await beds on medical/surgical units. The RN works closely with the Hospitalist and the Case Management/Utilization Management staff assigned to the unit. The RN assesses patient needs, plans and delivers nursing care, and evaluates the care provided. Care includes patients’ spiritual, emotional, and physiological needs and is tailored to their age, growth, and development. In a charge role, the RN also performs clinical and leadership functions. The RN is directly accountable to the Nurse Manager for the quality of patient care delivered.

Requirements

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) required.
  • Ability to assess, plan, direct, intervene in, and evaluate patient care.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Minimum of 1 year of RN acute-care experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the needs of each assigned patient.
  • Plan nursing care to address patients’ spiritual, emotional, and physiological needs.
  • Carry out the plan of care directly and/or through the leadership of supervised personnel, and evaluate the plan’s effectiveness.
  • Modify and deliver care appropriate to patients’ age, growth, and development, consistent with the unit’s scope of services.
  • When serving in the charge role, perform clinical and leadership functions, assess patient needs, and plan nursing care.
  • Work closely with the Hospitalist and the Case Management/Utilization Management staff assigned to the unit.
