Requirements

  • Current and valid state RN or RD License/Registered.
  • Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
  • A minimum of three (3) year’s experience in an acute care hospital environment.
  • Excellent clinical, interpersonal and communication skills essential.
  • Team approach to patient care.
  • Working knowledge of computers and computer applications.
  • Day and evening flexibility required.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Diabetes Educator certification.
  • If not a CDE, 15 hrs. of Continuing Education in Diabetes within 2 months of hire and 15 hours of Continuing Education every year until CDE obtained.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Masters of Science in Nutrition preferred.
  • Current and valid state RN License

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the daily assessment of the needs of the in-patient and out-patient departments related to diabetes patient education.
  • Provide initial and on-going training of staff.
  • Coordinate, implement, and evaluate specific diabetes education related to clinical nursing/staff functions.
  • Ensure all patient care nursing staff are oriented to the diabetes standards of care and the nursing scope of practice at the Medical Center, as well as policy and procedures and medical equipment used in routine diabetes patient care.
  • Act as a facilitator for learning new skills and updating current skills related to diabetes.
  • Communicate with Directors and Supervisors regarding diabetes educational needs.
  • Participate in planning the curriculum.
  • Demonstrate professional accountability in the acknowledgement of, and compliance with accepted standards of nursing care.
  • Commit to act within ethical principles and use independent, dependent, and interdependent interventions to fulfill this responsibility.
