About The Position
WMAZ, TEGNA’s ABC affiliate in Macon, Georgia, is seeking a Story Desk Editor to help transform its newsroom operations. The role combines assignment editing and digital content production and serves as a central hub for newsroom planning, production, and curation across platforms. As part of the Story Management Desk, the editor leads breaking-news coverage, shapes daily story planning, and develops content for streaming, digital, social, and broadcast audiences. The position requires sound editorial judgment, strong writing, and the ability to work effectively under tight deadlines. The editor collaborates with multimedia journalists, producers, and photojournalists to deliver accurate, relevant, and engaging community-focused stories. Requirements
- One to three years of journalism experience in a local newsroom or digital production; collegiate experience is included.
- Strong news judgment and ability to make fast, sound editorial decisions under pressure.
- Excellent writing skills and ability to produce accurate, compelling content quickly.
- Experience with newsroom systems and content management system tools.
- Organizational skills to manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
- Collaborative, solutions-focused mindset and ability to thrive in a team environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications, or equivalent experience.
Responsibilities
- Lead and communicate newsroom coverage during breaking news, ensuring accuracy, urgency, and balance.
- Identify and plan stories that matter to the community using editorial judgment and social listening.
- Create and edit engaging content for the website, mobile app, and streaming platforms.
- Guide newsroom logistics and provide editorial support for multimedia journalists, producers, and photojournalists.
- Edit reporter content for accuracy, grammar, AP style, digital best practices, fairness, and ethical considerations.
- Enhance storytelling with creative elements such as graphics, video, and audience-submitted content.
- Use available metrics to inform coverage and improve audience reach.
- Support newsroom operations and coverage planning as needed.
- Uphold TEGNA’s journalistic standards and values across all platforms.
