About The Position

The Cincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking an Assistant Sports Editor to join its sports team in the Greater Cincinnati market. The role works hands-on with reporters and supports sports audience growth across coverage of the Reds, Bengals, an MLS franchise, four NCAA Division 1 universities, and high school sports programs.

The position involves editing on deadline and covering sports at all levels. The successful candidate will work a flexible schedule, respond to breaking and trending news, and help deliver enterprise journalism. The role also emphasizes digital headline writing and SEO, multimedia content optimization, and engagement with local fanbases. Requirements

• Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Management experience.
• Experience making coverage decisions based on audience insights.
• A valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
• Experience editing on deadline and covering sports at all levels.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule.
• Experience with digital headline writing and SEO, multimedia content optimization, and engagement with local fanbases.

• Experience with audience-insight metrics, mobile engagement, and enterprise reporting.

Responsibilities

• Directly supervise and coach a team of reporters.
• Edit content to Cincinnati Enquirer standards.
• Use metrics to inform story choices and shape coverage strategies.
• Work with the digital production team to ensure optimal engagement on stories.
• Identify opportunities for enterprise and investigative journalism.
• Develop and execute coverage plans for daily coverage and tentpole events.
• Respond to breaking and trending news and deliver worthwhile enterprise journalism to the audience.
