About The Position

The Cincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking an Assistant Sports Editor to join its award-winning team. The role works hands-on with reporters and supports audience growth through sports coverage in the Greater Cincinnati market, which includes professional teams, NCAA Division 1 universities, and high school sports programs. The successful candidate will edit on deadline, cover sports at all levels, and help the newsroom respond to breaking and trending news while delivering enterprise journalism. The role also involves digital headline writing and SEO, multimedia content optimization, and engaging with local fanbases. A flexible schedule is required.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Management experience.
• Experience making coverage decisions based on audience insights.
• Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule.

Responsibilities

• Directly supervise and coach a team of reporters.
• Edit content to Cincinnati Enquirer standards.
• Use metrics to inform story choices and shape coverage strategies.
• Work with the digital production team to ensure optimal engagement on stories.
• Identify opportunities for enterprise and investigative journalism.
• Ensure coverage plans are developed and executed for daily coverage and tentpole events.
