About The Position

The Community Director (CD) is an integral part of Guilford’s Residential Education mission to create a safe, supportive, and engaged living-learning community that enhances students’ personal and academic success and supports the College’s mission and core values in word and practice. CDs support the curricular experience by engaging students in intentional developmental opportunities outside the classroom, and by cultivating leadership. They are committed to serving as allies, advocates, and resources to students of all backgrounds and to fostering an environment of social support, personal autonomy, and community accountability. Each CD oversees a designated residential community of approximately 250-400 traditional students and a student staff of 10-20 Resident Advisors and 1-2 Assistant Community Directors. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Residential Education and Housing. The Community Director is a full-time, twelve-month, live-in position. Compensation commensurate upon experience and in adherence with the College’s compensation plan; full benefits; an on-campus furnished staff apartment with most utilities provided; a partial meal plan; access to campus facilities such as the fitness center and library and parking.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Residence life, student affairs, advising or first-year programs experience required.
  • Must be available for primary residence to be in an on-campus staff apartment in the residence halls.
  • Must be available to serve through the full academic year.
  • Evening and weekend hours are required.
  • Must be able to walk stairs and conduct rounds through residential areas and buildings.
  • Must be a great team contributor and be able to work autonomously.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a rapport with the residential cohort and oversee their safety and well-being.
  • Monitor the condition of a residential area and assist in the maintenance of an environment free of health and safety hazards through regular communication with the public safety and facilities departments and routine health and safety inspections.
  • Oversee conflict resolution strategies and processes within the residential community.
  • Assist in housing processes such as reassignments and check-ins/check-outs.
  • Depending on area, assist in the implementation of residential learning communities and/or programming models such as Themed Living Communities.
  • Contribute to Resident Advisor (RA) and Assistant Community Director (ACD) staff recruitment, hiring, and training.
  • Directly supervise a student staff of 10-20 RAs and 1-2 ACDs; conduct regular staff and individual meetings, and administer a staff performance appraisal process.
  • Foster leadership among the RA staff through strategic support, guidance, development opportunities, accountability, and teamwork.
  • Advise RA/ACD small group and committee work.
  • Coordinate the on-call schedule.
  • Facilitate student conduct hearings, to render decisions of responsibility and adjudicate sanctions; process cases through Guardian software and facilitate communication.
  • Be as present, visible, and available to students as is reasonably possible with regular office hours and regular participation/presence in hall and campus activities.
  • Advise and mentor students concerning personal, academic, and social concerns, utilizing alerts and referrals to other campus resources when appropriate.
  • Respond to referrals through our on-campus alert systems including student follow-up, referrals to other departments, and notifications/communication through said system.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and various campus departments.
  • Maintain regular office hours, be available by phone and email.
  • Confer regularly with supervisors and other College personnel about student or staff concerns.
  • Assist with new student orientation and other campus-wide events.
  • Complete departmental reports, surveys, and forms within established deadlines.
  • Attend regular departmental and individual meetings and serve on College committees as assigned.
  • Serve on-call to respond to emergencies, crises, and policy violations on a rotational basis during any period that students are on campus (including some breaks).
  • Oversee on-call RA and ACD staff and procedures.
  • Oversee assigned focus area(s) and respective allocated budgets within Residential Education & Housing or Student Affairs, directly or through RA/ACD committees, such as: RA/ACD Training and Development, RA/ACD Recruitment and Hiring, RA/ACD Appreciation and Support, Web and Social Media Management, and/or Departmental Assessment.
  • Directly oversee the RA/ACD staff in their programming responsibilities in accordance with a departmental programming model.
  • Coordinate and execute regular staff-development and staff-building programs.
  • Manage allocated budgets for residential programming and staff-development/staff-building (varies by area).
  • CD responsibilities throughout the summer months may include special projects and/or work in other departments on campus.
  • Additional duties may arise throughout the course of the year.
