About The Position

The University of North Florida’s Department of Art, Art History, & Design is hiring a 9-month, non-tenure-earning Instructor of Art History. The position includes a 4/4 teaching load or its equivalent, along with service. The instructor will contribute to the undergraduate Art History curriculum by teaching introductory, survey, and upper-level courses, according to departmental needs and the candidate’s expertise. The instructor is expected to engage students in critical thinking, visual analysis, historical research, and interpretation, and to contribute to the continued development of the Art History curriculum. The department offers comprehensive undergraduate programs and emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, historical understanding, and professional practice. Its collaborative learning environment values diverse perspectives, interdisciplinary engagement, experiential learning, and innovation in teaching and research. The position reports to the Department Chair, Dr. Jenny Hager, and is not a supervisory role. The expected start date is August 2, 2027. The position requires a background check and may require a credit check. The incumbent is designated a Responsible Employee under Title IX and must promptly report allegations of sexual misconduct, sexual violence, and child sexual abuse to the University’s Title IX Administrator or a divisional Title IX Coordinator.

Requirements

  • Hold a Master’s degree in Art History or a closely related discipline from an acceptable accredited institution by the employment start date.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate Art History courses.
  • Evidence of effective teaching, student engagement, and student success.
  • Ability to teach introductory and survey-level Art History courses.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Familiarity with online or technology-enhanced instruction.

Nice To Haves

  • Earned Ph.D. in Art History or a closely related field.
  • Specialization in Medieval and/or Renaissance art and visual culture.
  • Ability to teach courses situating Medieval and/or Renaissance art within broader global, intercultural, or interdisciplinary contexts.
  • Experience teaching a range of introductory, survey, and upper-level Art History courses.
  • Evidence of scholarly research, publications, presentations, curatorial work, or other professional activity in Art History.
  • Experience with curriculum development and innovative approaches to undergraduate teaching.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a 4/4 course load or its equivalent and perform service.

  • Engage students in critical thinking, visual analysis, historical research, and interpretation.
