About The Position

Salesforce is hiring a Senior/Lead Performance Engineer for its Salesforce Database team. SalesforceDB is the transactional database behind Salesforce CRM, processing more than 1.1 trillion transactions per month across thousands of database instances. The team works across the distributed transactional database stack to improve performance and scalability with every release. Performance engineers partner with database and storage developers, application performance engineers, infrastructure engineers, and analytics teams. Their work is deployed across the production fleet, and some is published at database research conferences. The team values integrity, rigor, and continuous learning.

Requirements

  • A related technical degree or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years of performance engineering experience on systems software, ideally databases, storage, or distributed systems.
  • Strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, concurrency, and memory management.
  • Strong coding skills in Java or C/C++.
  • Practical experience with load, benchmark, and regression testing, ideally for multi-tenant workloads at scale.
  • A track record of root cause analysis for performance and scalability problems in complex distributed systems.
  • Strong SQL and performance data analysis skills, including CPU, latency, throughput, and per-tenant resource use.
  • Experience with telemetry, dashboards, and monitoring against performance targets.
  • Fluency with Linux, OS internals, and shell or Python scripting.
  • Clear communication and collaboration skills across database, storage, infrastructure, application performance, and analytics teams.
  • Integrity and a growth mindset, including reporting what the data shows, seeking feedback, and continuing to learn.

Nice To Haves

  • An MS or PhD in databases or distributed systems.
  • Deep knowledge of database internals, including the optimizer, query execution, storage, transactions, and concurrency control.
  • SQL query optimization experience.
  • Experience with Splunk or similar log analytics for performance monitoring.
  • Experience with Java and C/C++ profiling, JVM tuning, and heap dump analysis.
  • Statistical analysis and experimental design experience.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the design and scalability of the database stack with development teams, from research and conception through production delivery.
  • Profile the database engine and storage service to find optimization opportunities and meet the performance and scale needs of large customers and newly onboarded applications.
  • Identify root causes of performance and scalability problems, then fix them or drive fixes with the owning team.
  • Lead benchmarking and modeling to guide hardware selection and fleet capacity planning.
  • Build telemetry, dashboards, and analysis to measure production fleet performance against targets.
  • Own performance qualification for SalesforceDB releases, including building and running workloads and benchmarks used to decide whether releases go to production.
