About The Position

Requirements

• Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license for the state in which the nurse practices.
• Full command of spoken and written English.
• Current Health Certificate, if applicable.
• Current PPD or chest X-ray.
• Current BLS card.
• Successful completion of screening tests for the clinical specialty area(s) in which the nurse practices.
• Considerable knowledge of medical disorders, treatments, and child growth and development.
• Working knowledge of public health problems and treatment procedures coordinated with health and social service agencies.
• Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting school health services.
• Ability to identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease.
• Ability to develop and maintain student health records and positive working relationships.

Nice To Haves

• One year of prior LPN experience is preferred.
• Some knowledge of the school organization and the community served.

Responsibilities

• Develop policies, procedures, and work standards for the school health program.
• Monitor the school health program’s compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies.
• Initiate program changes as needed and manage program allotment efficiently.
• Prepare health reports for the supervisor, board of education, and health department.
• Collaborate with child-support agencies to design and provide a school health program.
• Negotiate professional and medical services essential to the school health program.
• Provide first aid and medically prescribed services.
• Maintain the security of school health supplies.
• Instruct students in health education according to the state K–12 curriculum.
• Serve as a resource person on health issues and provide health-related staff development for school staff and volunteers.
• Screen students and staff and conduct health appraisals.
• Provide follow-up evaluations for students as required and recommend corrective action when problems are identified.
• Conduct home visits when appropriate and correspond with parents about children’s health needs.
• Record immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data.
• Coordinate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources.
• Perform other LPN duties as assigned.
