Requirements

• High school graduation or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
• Ability to safely handle wet, slippery glassware.
• Keen attention to detail.
• Ability to communicate effectively with others.
• Ability to work with repetitive tasks and work independently and efficiently as needed.

• Some knowledge of or experience with laboratory equipment and apparatus.
• Typically, incumbents have worked in a laboratory setting.

Responsibilities

• Collect, clean, and sterilize glassware and related materials from assigned teaching and research laboratories.
• Maintain the cleanliness of laboratory equipment, facilities, kitchen areas, workstations, and kitchen materials.
• Operate washing and sterilizing equipment, including dishwashers, autoclaves, drying ovens, sterilizers, and pipet pluggers.
• Deliver equipment and supplies to laboratory facilities and arrange them as needed.
• Maintain and stock the storeroom according to established procedures, and package teaching supplies for laboratory instruction.
• Calculate total weekly Drosophila food orders and scale ingredients to match the required quantities.
• Prepare fruit fly food by dissolving yeast, sugar, and agar in an industrial kettle; dispense it into 10 ml vials and/or 50 ml bottles and deliver it to laboratories.
• Make one or more batches of fruit fly food each week depending on order volume.
• Order and organize required research supplies and records.
• Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required.
• Assign and monitor tasks and train a small number of student or part-time temporary support personnel when assigned.
• Perform related work as assigned.
