About The Position

Scotland Health Care System is seeking a dedicated Medical Assistant for their Pembroke Primary - Family Medicine clinic. This full-time position is on the 1st shift and requires a current Medical Assistant certification and BLS certification. The ideal candidate will possess excellent computer skills, communication, organization, and customer service skills. The Medical Assistant will be responsible for a variety of clinical and clerical duties to ensure efficient patient care and clinic operations.

Responsibilities

  • Bring patients to the nursing station within fifteen minutes of their scheduled appointment, taking vital signs (ht, wt, bp, p, resp, and temp) error-free, and recording them in the patients EHR.
  • Review and update allergies in EHR.
  • Obtain a brief patient history and record pertinent information in the patient’s EHR.
  • Review medical records and report any pertinent information to clinicians (e.g., lab, x-ray results).
  • Obtain laboratory specimens as ordered, perform necessary testing prior to the PA/FNP/MD seeing the patient.
  • Escort the patient to the exam room and prepare the patient for the PA/FNP/MD, providing privacy.
  • Obtain lab specimens, perform blood draws, give injections, or perform procedures as ordered by the PA/FNP/MD, recording results into the patient’s EHR.
  • Identify emergency situations and notify the PA/FNP/MD immediately.
  • Assist PA/FNP/MD in emergencies, laceration repairs, or minor surgery, as directed.
  • Participate in ongoing PI activities to improve quality of care.
  • Perform other clerical duties as needed.
  • Provide clear, concise, adequate information to patients regarding referrals, including date, time, location, and preparation required.
  • Check emergency medical supplies according to policy to ensure dates have not expired.
  • Provide medical education to patients as directed by the PA/FNP/MD.
  • Assist Patient Service Specialist with appropriate scheduling for visits.
  • Encourage use of patient portal.
  • Check inventory weekly, keep inventory stocked, and rotate items.
  • Keep exam rooms neat and stocked with supplies.
  • Keep drug sample area neat, check medications for expiration dates monthly, and rotate/destroy outdated medications.
  • Prepare laboratory specimens collected daily for hospital courier pick-up.
  • Prepare laboratory/imaging results and patient notes received from outside sources to be sent to HIM for scanning.
  • Ensure that the PA/FNP/MD has reviewed, initialed, and dated the paperwork.
  • Report any STD or communicable disease to the local Health Department according to policy.
  • Follow-up with patients who have abnormal lab findings.
  • Maintain proficiency in all procedures performed at the clinic, including EKGs and lab procedures.
  • Complete and maintain quality controls and calibrations as directed.
  • Clean the lab area daily, using disinfectant as needed, and keep it orderly.
  • Assist in maintaining an effective patient survey process.
  • Actively participate in performance improvement activities to enhance the quality of care and service.
  • Perform CLIA waivered tests.
  • Have knowledge of human growth and development through the life span of the patient and the ability to meet the needs of and provide care for these patients.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
