About The Position

This opportunity entails being responsible for performing routine technical work in both field and laboratory settings on a project-to-project basis. Archaeologists will take a hands-on approach using established methodologies and procedures to collect and document archaeological data.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field

Nice To Haves

  • Sorts through soil to recover physical remains, artifacts, and ecofacts (bones, shells, carbonized materials, etc.) to acquire elementary data from siftings.
  • Identifies and recognizes artifacts and ecofacts with instruction from more experienced staff.
  • Sorts artifacts into categories in preparation for the lab, performing preliminary triage of cultural and non-cultural materials.
  • Understands how to control the way sediments are removed to preserve the time data between layers of sediment.
  • Uses field checklists to collect data and note taking (paper or electronic).
  • Applies quantitative analysis to recognize changes between sediment layers when collecting data.
  • Participation in a university-sponsored archaeological field school, volunteer or paid museum/repository work, assisting professional archaeologists/ archaeological business firms to carry out contract work.

Responsibilities

  • Works in both the field or laboratory/office settings depending on project needs.
  • May be referred to as a Field Technician or Lab Technician to comport with any client-specific labor classification system.
  • May conduct physically demanding tasks including pedestrian archaeological reconnaissance surveys, subsurface testing using hand tools (augers, shovels, sifting screens.)
  • May be assigned to a temporary project-specific field laboratory or a regular office laboratory to carry out such tasks as cleaning, stabilizing, and cataloging archaeological specimens, data entry and manipulation, compilation and maintenance of field and/or laboratory records.
  • Assists the HNTB cultural resources team to carry out project tasks.
  • Works on data collection utilizing established protocols and procedures and may be performed in adverse environmental conditions (i.e., rugged terrain, inclement weather, remote locations).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
