About The Position

The Data and AI Systems Engineer works within Fairfax County’s Innovation Division and contributes to the county’s unified data and enterprise artificial intelligence ecosystem. The role connects backend data infrastructure with frontend analytics to support data-informed decision-making, transparency, operational efficiency, and county operations, including public safety and public service delivery. It also supports development of database integrations and AI capabilities, collaboration with agency analysts and inter-agency workgroups, and implementation of responsible and ethical AI policies. The position develops prototypes and automation workflows; designs and maintains data pipelines; monitors and manages database engines across on-premises and cloud environments; deploys business intelligence tools and dashboards; and configures enterprise AI and machine learning platforms. The role also enforces data governance, security, and ethical controls and collaborates with county departments, regional partners, and vendors. This is a hybrid role requiring at least 40% onsite work at the Fairfax County Government Center. Work is generally sedentary in a normal office environment. A criminal background check is required. Selection may include a panel interview and an exercise.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in computer science or a closely related field, or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.
  • Proficiency in SQL and Python for data manipulation, analysis, and pipeline scripting.
  • Hands-on experience with modern cloud data platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, or Azure.
  • Deep understanding of relational databases, data modeling, and core ETL/ELT pipeline design.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365, particularly Copilot, Copilot Studio, or advanced AI agentic and workflow automation tools.
  • Experience designing, validating, and optimizing data architectures to align with business requirements.
  • Competency building intuitive dashboards and operational data visualizations using Power BI or Tableau.
  • Proactive problem-solving and initiative on complex issues, including providing sound technical recommendations in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong technical communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively across data, AI, and multidisciplinary teams or agencies.

Nice To Haves

  • Interest or experience working within the public sector or handling large-scale, highly structured data environments.
  • Bilingual ability in English and another language is encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Develop rapid innovation prototypes, automation scripts, and automated workflows to solve practical business problems.
  • Design and maintain optimized ETL/ELT pipelines within Snowflake using frameworks such as Apache Airflow or Azure Data Factory.
  • Monitor, tune, and manage central database engines across on-premises SQL Server, Azure cloud platforms, and Snowflake.
  • Deploy enterprise business intelligence tools and interactive dashboards using Power BI or Tableau, with advanced SQL and DAX.
  • Configure and deploy centralized AI systems and machine learning platforms using Microsoft Copilot, Copilot Studio, AI Builder, ChatGPT, and Gemini.
  • Enforce data governance, security, and ethical controls to help ensure AI systems and data workflows are secure, transparent, and compliant.
  • Collaborate with cross-departmental teams, regional partners, and vendors to share technical capabilities, best practices, and system documentation.
  • Perform other duties as required to support Innovation Division efforts.
