Commissioning Engineer, Data Center Engineering

Apple•Prineville, OR
•Onsite

About The Position

Apple’s Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) organization supports the systems and infrastructure behind Apple’s products and services. Infrastructure Services manages data center equipment and systems that deliver compute, storage, and networking services across Apple. The Data Center Commissioning team is seeking a Commissioning Engineer to provide firsthand, day-to-day onsite oversight at a mission-critical data center campus and serve as Apple’s primary onsite commissioning representative. The engineer will drive execution of the commissioning lifecycle from Levels 1–5, ensuring that field work follows Apple’s global commissioning guidelines, playbooks, test procedures, and pass/fail criteria. The role coordinates and audits third-party commissioning agents, general contractors, subcontractors, and equipment vendors; tracks construction and testing activities; manages site readiness and testing schedules; and oversees field QA/QC, issue resolution, safety, and operational turnover. The engineer partners with Data Center Places, Operations, Engineering, and Commissioning teams to resolve field challenges and prepare the local facility operations team to take ownership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Architectural, or Systems Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical field/job-related experience.
  • At least 4 years of direct field experience executing or managing commissioning in a hyperscale data center, mission-critical facility, heavy industrial environment, or similar setting.
  • Working knowledge of large-scale electrical delivery systems, including UPS, switchgear, and generation, and mechanical cooling systems, including chilled water plants, hydronics, and CRAH/CRAC units.
  • Experience directing or overseeing onsite Level 3 (Pre-Functional), Level 4 (Functional Performance Testing), and Level 5 (Integrated Systems Testing) activities.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and field-verify MEP drawing packages, Single-Line Diagrams, and Sequences of Operation.
  • Experience managing onsite vendors, contractors, or specialized testing firms.
  • Ability to work onsite daily at the assigned data center location.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as a dedicated onsite Commissioning Engineer or Resident Engineer for a major data center build or campus expansion.
  • Industry-recognized commissioning certification such as Certified Commissioning Authority (CxA), Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP), or Building Commissioning Professional (BCxP).
  • Hands-on experience with commissioning management software such as CxAlloy, Facility Grid, or similar tools for field tracking and issue management.
  • Practical field experience troubleshooting Building Automation Systems (BAS), Direct Digital Control (DDC), and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS).
  • Strong understanding of field safety standards, including OSHA/NFPA 70E, MOP execution, and hazardous energy control.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify field coordination clashes, resolve complex physical engineering challenges, and provide continuous-improvement feedback to global engineering teams.
  • Proficiency with AI tools to enhance daily work, including AI-assisted field report summarization, automated submittal parsing, and punch-list tracking.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary onsite Apple commissioning representative for an assigned data center campus and drive day-to-day commissioning lifecycle execution (Levels 1–5).
  • Coordinate with Data Center Places, Operations, Engineering, and Commissioning teams to align site execution with Apple’s global commissioning playbooks, test procedures, and pass/fail criteria.
  • Manage, coordinate, and audit the daily onsite activities of third-party Commissioning Agents, general contractors, mechanical and electrical subcontractors, and vendor field engineers.
  • Conduct field walks and QA/QC inspections to verify equipment installation against approved Basis of Design, MEP-FP drawing packages, Single-Line Diagrams, and P&IDs before energization or pressurization.
  • Drive the daily site commissioning schedule and coordinate load bank deployments, specialized testing equipment, vendor visits, and local test readiness.
  • Manage the site commissioning issue log, track punch-list items, drive field root-cause analysis, and ensure timely resolution of equipment deficiencies.
  • Validate field execution of Pre-Functional Testing and Functional Performance Testing for mechanical systems such as chillers, CDUs, and AHUs, and electrical systems such as UPS, switchgear, and generators.
  • Enforce onsite adherence to Methods of Procedure, mechanical Lockout/Tagout, and energized electrical work safety protocols during complex switching and live testing.
  • Act as the immediate escalation point for field engineering challenges and collaborate with Data Center Engineering, Data Center Operations, construction managers, and third-party design engineers to resolve physical integration issues.
  • Facilitate operational turnover by ensuring field training is completed, O&M documentation reflects the physical build, and the local facility operations team is prepared to take ownership.
