Staff Software Engineer

Sustainment•Austin, TX

About The Position

Sustainment is an AI-native software platform that helps U.S.-based manufacturers find and work with suppliers. It supports both Department of Defense and commercial customers. The Staff Software Engineer is a hands-on individual contributor with Tech Lead responsibility who sets technical direction, makes architectural decisions, writes production code, and helps the engineering team scale while preserving what works. The role owns technical design and architecture for ABP-based applications, delivers full-stack features, raises engineering standards, and is accountable for the quality, security, reliability, performance, and observability of shipped systems. The engineer also leads .NET and ABP upgrades, evaluates tools and approaches, translates business and customer needs into technical priorities with Engineering and Product leadership, and documents decisions for the team.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience, including multiple years owning the architecture of production systems.
  • A proven record of leading technical delivery across a team without formal authority.
  • At least 5 years building production systems with C# and ASP.NET Core.
  • Strong understanding of the ASP.NET Core request pipeline, dependency injection lifetimes, and asynchronous behavior, including debugging these under load.
  • Strong EF Core and PostgreSQL experience, including migration strategy across environments, query plans, indexing, and concurrency control.
  • Experience finding and fixing .NET performance problems in production using tools such as dotnet-trace, dotnet-counters, or Datadog APM.
  • Working proficiency in Angular and TypeScript sufficient to ship features end to end.
  • Experience with distributed systems, cloud infrastructure (AWS), containers, and CI/CD.
  • Secure coding discipline and experience in regulated or high-assurance environments.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to brief engineers and executives.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance; certain programs may require U.S. citizenship.
  • Authorization to work for any employer in the U.S.; the company cannot sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa.

Nice To Haves

  • Production experience with ABP Framework is strongly preferred; deep experience with similar patterns in another .NET framework is an acceptable substitute if the candidate can learn ABP quickly.
  • Early-stage startup or SaaS experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical design for major features and own the architecture of ABP-based applications, including module boundaries, shared libraries, and conventions.
  • Ship high-quality production full-stack code, including solutions to difficult and ambiguous problems.
  • Own quality end to end.
  • Raise engineering standards through code reviews, design reviews, and direct mentoring.
  • Set the team's .NET standards and enforce them in code review and CI.
  • Build secure-by-design systems, including for AWS GovCloud and government customer environments.
  • Own the reliability, performance, and observability of shipped systems; address failures and fix root causes.
  • Evaluate tools, frameworks, and methods and make technical decisions.
  • Plan and lead .NET and ABP major-version upgrades across services while feature work continues.
  • Translate customer and business needs into clear technical priorities with the Director of Engineering and Product.
  • Document decisions so the team can execute without the engineer present.

Benefits

  • Medical insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Company holidays
  • 401(k) matching
