About The Position

The Application Engineer leads complex partial discharge (PD) testing, diagnostics, and troubleshooting for high-voltage assets, on site and remotely. The role plans and performs PD measurements, evaluates data quality, interprets findings, and provides technically sound recommendations. Supported assets include transformers, AIS and GIS switchgear, rotating machines, cables, and other high-voltage equipment. The position serves as a lead technical contact for customer escalations and challenging applications, coordinating with customers, sales, product management, and engineering. It includes customer visits, field demonstrations, commissioning, workshops, and training, as well as advising customers on PD theory, measurement methods, diagnostic limitations, analysis, reporting, and asset condition assessment. The engineer also supports strategic pre-sales and post-sales activities, mentors colleagues, develops technical materials and presentations, and provides structured field feedback to product management and engineering. Other testing technologies and duties may be supported as business needs require. The role requires advanced PD expertise, strong knowledge of power systems, substations, and high-voltage equipment, and the ability to communicate complex technical findings to audiences ranging from technicians to executives. Travel may be up to 50%, primarily in the United States and Canada, usually for trips of up to one week; occasional international travel or longer stays may be required. The position requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, physics engineering, or a closely related discipline. A master's degree in electrical engineering and relevant professional engineering registration or eligibility are assets. Typically, candidates have at least seven years of relevant professional experience. Placement at Level III or IV depends on expertise, independence, assignment complexity, customer-facing responsibility, and technical leadership. Working conditions include an orderly, clean, properly lighted and ventilated office with low to moderate noise. Physical demands include clear communication, occasional reaching and lifting of objects over 50 pounds, operating office equipment, frequent sitting, and occasional bending and kneeling. Reasonable accommodations may be made.

  • Typically seven or more years of relevant professional experience, with demonstrated technical depth in high-voltage testing, electrical asset diagnostics, and PD measurement and analysis.
  • Substantial hands-on experience with PD measurements and diagnostics, including independently planning tests, interpreting findings, and explaining recommendations.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting high-voltage apparatus such as transformers, switchgear, rotating machines, or cables.
  • Strong working knowledge of high-voltage testing and diagnostic methods.
  • Proven ability to lead customer-facing technical projects, resolve complex application issues, and manage competing priorities in the field.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills in English, and ability to communicate complex technical findings clearly to varied audiences.
  • Strong customer relationship and consultative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, lead technical engagements, and collaborate across sales, product management, and engineering teams.
  • Ability to coach and support colleagues while contributing to shared regional and corporate goals.

  • Knowledge of organizations and business processes of electric utilities, government agencies, manufacturers, and industrial power users in North America.
  • Creative, practical, and solutions-oriented approach.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50%, primarily within the United States and Canada; occasional international travel or longer stays may be required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Physics Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Ability to meet the stated physical demands, with reasonable accommodations available.
