About The Position

Snap Inc. is seeking a Staff Security Engineer to join its Information Security organization. Snap Security teams protect the trust and safety of the global community by securing the systems and data behind Snapchat and other digital services, with privacy, security, and resilience at the forefront. The Staff Security Engineer will lead security architecture across applications, infrastructure, enterprise systems, identity platforms, and/or detection and response capabilities. The role drives cross-functional initiatives to reduce risk at scale, sets technical strategy and long-term roadmaps in security domains, and helps ensure secure, resilient, and scalable architecture is built into products and platforms. The engineer will also mentor senior engineers and promote strong security practices through design reviews, knowledge sharing, and principled technical decisions. Snap follows a “default together” approach and expects team members to work in an office four or more days per week. The position is eligible for equity in the form of RSUs. U.S. base salary ranges vary by pay zone: Zone A (CA, WA, NYC), $251,000–$377,000 annually; Zone B, $238,000–$358,000 annually; and Zone C, $213,000–$320,000 annually. Starting pay depends on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field such as computer science or engineering, or equivalent years of experience.
  • At least 9 years of post-bachelor’s industry experience; or a technical master’s degree and at least 8 years of post-graduate security experience; or a related technical Ph.D. and at least 5 years of post-graduate security experience.
  • At least 1 year of experience with technical leadership or serving as a domain expert to a technical organization.
  • Deep expertise in secure system design, threat modeling, and risk reduction across applications, infrastructure, identity, or detection and response domains.
  • Strong understanding of cloud-native and distributed systems security.
  • Experience identifying and mitigating systemic vulnerabilities.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals, including the ability to write production-quality code and build automation to improve security at scale.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence architecture and technical direction across teams without direct authority.

  • Experience setting security strategy or technical direction for a large-scale product, platform, or enterprise environment.
  • Strong strategic thinking and demonstrated ability to define technical roadmaps and lead multi-team initiatives.
  • Experience collaborating with executive leadership to align technical solutions with business priorities and risk management strategies.
  • Track record of mentoring senior engineers and fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and evolution of security architecture across applications, infrastructure, enterprise systems, identity platforms, and/or detection and response capabilities.
  • Drive complex, cross-functional security initiatives that reduce risk at scale, partnering with engineering, product, and operations to embed security in core systems and workflows.
  • Establish technical strategy and long-term roadmaps in one or more security domains, such as application security, IAM, infrastructure security, abuse prevention, or detection and response.
  • Define and champion secure design patterns, threat models, and engineering standards to proactively address systemic risks.
  • Influence platform and product architecture decisions so security, resilience, and scalability are built in by default.
  • Mentor senior engineers and raise the security bar through design reviews, knowledge sharing, and principled decision-making.
